SEGA has just announced that Sonic is to have two next gen outings (or rather, one next gen, and one new gen, if we are to employ Nintendo’s latest PR-speak) – in addition to the previously announced PS3/360 version there is also to be a Wii-exclusive version, tentatively named Sonic Wild Fire.

The game is to make use of the Wii’s tilt and motion-sensing controls, so that you hold the horizontal controller left and right to steer the spiky little blue fella, and fling it forward to activate a dash attack to nobble ground and air enemies and to break down barriers. SPOnG just wee'd a bit in excitement. Not enough to stain the hotel's sheets though, thankfully.

Sonic Wild Fire is the first solo adventure for the character since 1991's original Sonic The Hedgehog, with a storyline based on that classic Oriental tale, Arabian Nights. The last few pages of the book have gone missing, so it’s up to our true blue hedgehog friend to re-create the story. The game’s environments are described as "vibrant…. filled with brightly coloured mosaic tiles, glistening oases, swaying palm trees, and crumbling stone columns."

Sonic activates specific areas in the prismatic environment to pull off new tricks and stunts, whilst jumping, dodging, and dashing various obstacles along the way.

Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of SEGA of America, Inc. claims that "Sonic Wild Fire and the innovative Wii controller changes the way gamers play interactive entertainment," and that, "SEGA is excited to lead the gameplay revolution through its support of Wii with a Sonic release built exclusively for this new system."

Sonic Wild Fire will also feature, "unique controller-focused mini-games" featuring multiplayer options and will be dashing to Wii in 2007. Ho ho ho! Watch right here for first screens as we get them later this week.

So what?

The last Sonic game that was of any good was Sonic 3 back on the Mega Drive. The latest incarnations in the 3D world killed it.

Can people seriously say Heroes, Shadow, even Sonic Adventure Battle were good games?

Bah! Sonic 3 was rubbish. Sonic Rush on DS was the last good Sonic game.
