Shatner to host Canadian games awards
William Shatner, more commonly known as Captain James T. Kirk of the Starship Enterprise, is to host a new gaming awards ceremony in the former British colony known as Canada.

The legendary actor, it seems, has made some time in his busy schedule, in-between doing adverts for cleaning products and breakfast cereals, to host the prestigious new awards event.

Well, even though Kirk's star is waning, its still a damn site better than the level of celebrity we get to host UK Games Awards events. SPOnG saw Jonathan Ross do one once, who was probably the best one we've seen. But then, he probably got paid around ten grand in unmarked bills for an hours work, so you'd expect a few good gags for that kind of money.

Back to the ex-Colony's awards. Kirk (Shatner) will present the Canadian Awards for the Electronic and Animated Arts (CAEAA 2006) on Thursday September 14 in Vancouver.

CAEAA Producer Holly Carinci said: "We wanted Mr. Shatner as our host from the beginning and I cannot tell you how excited we are to learn today that he has accepted the role.

"We have all worked really hard to create a world-class awards show that reflects these remarkable industries and now we have a phenomenal host in Mr. Shatner that will guarantee a fun, exciting, and memorable evening for everyone."

Meanwhile, back in Blighty, Future Publishing's Golden Joystick Awards later this year are to be presented by MTV's Emma Griffiths.

Future's lead press release re-writer, James Ashton-Tyler said: "I'm delighted that Emma Griffiths will be presenting our first Golden Joysticks TV show. Amongst our core audience she is well known from her work for MTV. She's the perfect host for the TV show as we continue to build the profile of the Golden Joystick Awards and their reach amongst the UK's growing population of gamers."

How come our ex-Colonial friends can get Captain James T. Kirk of the Starship Enterprise and all we can do is get some unknown bird off of MTV? Come on Britain. Try harder!
