Miyamoto Reveals Lost Mario and Luigi Title

N64 Dreams in the past...

As you are probably aware, there is constant rumouring to be found foretelling some top secret Mario game or another. The rumours with the best legs still live on in Nintendo folklore with Mario 3D for Super Nintendo and Mario and Luigi for GameCube (a game that emerged as the Luigi-less Mario Sunshine) lodged in the collective consciousness of Nintendo fans.

However, one rumoured game, a Mario and Luigi outing for Nintendo 64, was indeed in development, news that will come as a painful reminder that being a dedicated fan of something can be 'a bit rubbish'. In an interview with Level3 Magazine in Sweden Mario godfather Shigeru Miyamoto outlined this as one of his lost projects.

"Super Mario 128 was just one of many experimental games we had. Suddenly, everybody started talking about it. I'm in the all-too easy habit of starting a project only to later on not do much of it. There is a great deal of unfinished work on my desk. I worked on a prototype for the Nintendo 64 game with Mario and Luigi in it for some time."

What a bastard! Miyamoto casually mentions that he made the game of our dreams, then just gave it up because he's "in the habit" of doing such things! SPOnG now finds itself wondering what other gems are littering the floor of this callous and evil man's office. A great big Dolphin development kit with a massive 2D Metroid game he was supposed to look at but got sidetracked, perhaps a DD64 with the true successor to Super Mario World, now with a coffee stain down its side...

We didn't realise Miyamoto was a horrible evil man capable of such things. "Hmm... Shall I finish off that Mario and Luigi game or just sit around playing my stupid banjo and and do a bit of gardening instead...?" Interestingly, we quizzed Miyamoto on his activities outside of MAKING THE GAMES WE WANT TO PLAY last year. When asked about his working life during our exclusive one-on-one, Miyamoto told us "well these days, I don稚 really stick to the company timeframe. I kind of wander in when I want. But going home, I知 always one of the last people. Always one of the stragglers. There are a lot of projects I知 involved in so I値l wander around and check on the progress of those. I値l read reports, sit down in meetings to find out how games are progressing. And if there痴 one project I知 really focused on, maybe that値l be the one that takes up the majority of my day. I値l also spend a lot of time in our testing department to see how actual gameplay is progressing. And of course, perhaps a third of the day is taken up with emails. I like email because within the company I can send mail to perhaps ten guys at once on a project and then look at their responses."

Yeah, thanks a bunch. No wonder Super Mario Sunshine was so rubbish! You can catch the rest of the SPOnG Miyamoto interview here. You'll get even more annoyed when you see what happens on Sundays...

Then maybe we should boycott Nintendo so they cease to produce Mario alltogether, that way we won't have to worry about missing the games that were 5% completed. HA! Take that Nintendo, I hate your Mario Karts, and the Smash Bros.

I guessed that was how it worked anyway, and I've been pissed off with Nintendo for a long time.

Super Mario Sunshine, though, was good. But s**t, actually, compared to the prospect of Super Mario Bros. 4.

2. Tell you wouldn't swap it in a heartbeat for a true sequel to Super Mario World.

Yes it does. It's the best 3D Mario game in my opinion. The controls are fluid and the graphics work well, the gameplay is varied and at a perfect level.

2. Tell you wouldn't swap it in a heartbeat for a true sequel to Super Mario World.

Well, no, I wouldn't. Because Sunshine is very different to Mario World. And I'd rather have something different than a fifteen year old game with new levels.

Ok seriously now...someone's in denial. Mario Sunshine was a mediocre game with mario & comp. plastered throughout. The water jets were ridiculously lame and so was the plot. And besides, I'm sure the majority of people agree with me when I say that cleaning isn't fun...Digitally or in a real life situation (women don't count) ^_~.
All in all...anyone who says they'd take sunshine over a true sequel is one of three things.

A) Sixteen years old or younger
B) Completely ignorant on the subject of Mario games
C) Centally unstable

Hell, feel free to mix and match any of those. I don't post here much, but I couldn't let something like that go without response. Sunshine better than a Super Mario Successor? Utterly Ridiculous.

I have to agree. Of course, it's a horses for courses situation, but the bottom line is Sunshine wasn't even a tenth as good as Mario 64. 64 is, to quote a certain Microsoft executive, "Mario 64 is the literature of modern gaming and its remarkable that in the six or seven years it痴 been out, it has never been superseded." Link.

It's a matter of raw quality, of craftsmanship. M64 was a beautifully tailored and tested piece of software, its content pure magic. SMS was rushed, buggy, awkward to play. Aside from SMB2, Sunshine is without any doubt the worst Mario game.

As for writing off a true sequel to SMW as a few levels added to a 15 year old game, you need to play the game. Get a Game Boy Advance and a copy of Super Mario World. I think you have a GBA from us. If not, let me know.

It's a stunning game, no question the greatest 2D platform title ever released. Ooh, get the game and the GBA Player for GameCube... That's another option.

Let us know how you get on. :)

LOL. 64's controls sucked. Mario moved like a rock with legs. He could punch. Mario shouldn't be able to punch. The N64 controller always suffered from being very unresponsive.

Of course, it's a matter of opinion, but for me Mario 64 wasn't one hundredth as good as Sunshine. Certainly, it could never touch Nintendo's 2D Mario titles.

Prehaps a bit of the rose-tinted specs here from you.

Mario World is the best Mario game. No doubt. I own the original Super NES version, thanks very much.

I never said it wasn't great! But possibly on-par with Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island which is also very good.

Mario World worked because of the perfect level design and tight controls. I never found Mario 64 had any of that.

And that makes anything you say on this subject completely meaningless. It might negate anything you say in the future on the subject of videogames in general.

AdamM:

How long has it been since you gave mario64 any sort of play through? i know alot of people where very put off by it when it came out as the whole concept of analog control was just overwhelming. let alone managing to run at variable speeds AND managing your camera effectevly. I for one was never very good at the older 2d games but the second i got my hands on mario64 it was like the game id been waiting my whole life for.

the quick turn into a back flip. the triple jumping. the kicking of walls and yes even the punching (keepign in mind in previous games mario has always broken BRICK by punching up into it) where just fantastic and the levels where all set up perfectly to use all the abilities in clever ways. the whole thing worked amazingly well... even the swimming which was always everyones least favorite mario activity. All this inspite of the fact that it was basically the first 3d platform game EVAR! ("a" added for emphasis ^_~ )

long and short of it... perhaps you didnt apreciate 64 enough at the time as it was to much of a switch. I will say i dont have the burning hate for synshine that some seem to harbor and i actually loved the classic 2d/3d hidden levels where you didnt have the back pack on.

and besides... how can you complaine about mario punching but be fine with him killign enemies with a hose? (and an annoying talking hose to boot!)

@Viclo Hipster. Someone needs to calm themselves and move on, Super Mario World was a great game, but as others have said, I'd rather have a different kind of experience than just an old game with new levels.
