The Darkness – showing at Comic-Con this week
Surprise hit of E3 to wow comic book guys

20 Jul 2006
SPOnG loves comics. Mainly because they, like all the best things in life, are a true guilty pleasure. Our girlfriends and wives just raise their eyebrows in mock-disgust (at least we hope it’s 'mock') every time we disappear into Mega City comics in grimey ol' Camden Town.
As a geek hobby, it’s up there. Videogames, in comparison, don’t come close. Particularly these days since they have become all 'mainstream' and essential bolt-on lifestyle consumer goods for the masses. (Well, at least this is what many publisher's PR departments keep assuring us, but most of our girlfriends and wives still don't seem to buy this argument either).
Anyhow, it is with a double shot of geeky otaku-like joy that we receive and hence distribute the following news to your eyes. Starbreeze Studios' comic-book inspired game, The Darkness, is to be on show this coming weekend at geek heaven (otherwise known as Comic-Con International in San Diego). SPOnG will try to get some word from the event from our resident San Diego Otaku correspondent.
The Darkness is based on TopCow's dark psychological thriller comic book series of the same name. From the word-of-mouth hype the game garnered at E3, and from what SPOnG saw of it, it is definitely shaping up to be a major title this coming Xmas holiday season.

We actually had the opportunity to meet up with the goth-tastic development guys at E3, as well as briefly meeting up with The Darkness’s Eisner Award winning writer Paul Jenkins. Who, as we remember, had massive hands. Perhaps his immense and rather over-bearing physical girth (in a 'Superman' style way, not a fat way!) is one reason why his psyche is up and away with the fairies in a different netherworld. Perhaps not. Either way, the man has written some truly and deeply disturbing comics. He's up there with Alan Moore in our eyes.
In The Darkness you play mafia hitman Jackie Estacado, possessed by "The Darkness" an ancient demonic entity that gives him some very, very freaky and strange powers.
If you are keen to know more about the game, then check out a trailer right here on SPOnG and read our news on the first announcement of the game back in March right here.

Darkness is cool, browsed the first few issues in my comic shop assistant days and the artwork and story are good. This is one to keep an eye on.
