Nintendo, it seems, likes to keep pointing out it has no production issues blighting its Wii console, a direct thumbed nose at Sony who this week had to concede its entire European launch and drastically downsize Day One plans in the US and Japan.

In news that had been ridiculously hyped in the past 24 hours, it emerges that Nintendo simply wanted to make a somewhat smug announcement that detailed the fact that IBM has been sending it components 'for a bit'.

"We have been shipping well within this quarter (July)," said Ron Martino, director of IBM Technology Collaboration Solutions. "In fact, we have shipped a significant volume in this quarter."

"The first chips are in our possession," said Genyo Takeda, Senior Managing Director/General Manager, Integrated Research & Development Division at Nintendo. "Today's milestone marks the final stage of our drive to reach both core and non-traditional gamers with an inviting, inclusive and remarkable gaming experience."

"The first chips are in our possession" means absolutely nothing.

Sony very likely had its first Cell and RSX chips this quarter, and look how screwed its launch is.

Nintendo might have chips, but is final production underway? Everyone seemed to make such a song and dance about Sony's not being...

I'm sure if the launch was gonna be delayed Nintendo would have told us by now. I think Nintendo will be alright though. Even without Sony's mess ups I feel they were on track with Wii.

I'm so looking forward to November, better start saving mind, xmas is right after.

I'm guessing that as there's not that much going into the wii tech wise (compared to PS3) that it will not be too much of a problem

Technically, there hasn't been a launch date set, and you can't delay what hasn't been set yet... :)

it would be funny if it turned out the wii was really powerful after all and they couldnt make enough special transistors or get the wings to stay on and they put it back a year

in reality, id imagine the controller would be the source of any hardware problems for nintendo, in production or otherwise

on the other hand... they did say 'release somewhere in Q4 2006'.
That could of course shift, if they encounter manufacturing-problems, but I doubt they will.

I just hope, Nintendo won't pull a Sony on us Europeans.

In the same way that Nintendo is thumbing its nose at Sony by avoiding speaking directly about Sony but addressing the issue within their own company, is Spong making some kind of statement about Joystiq? ;)

the fact that the wii is going to be readily available for this christmas season doesnt really phase my decision to kind of want it.
