Warranty lottery revealed

We placed a call to Microsoft's Xbox customer support centre in the US today whereupon an operator outlined that indeed, there is some good news for some Xbox 360 owners. If your console is manufactured in or before January 2006, a one year warranty extension will be offered. The warranty extension will be from the date date of manufacture of your console, unless you have a sales receipt showing that you bought a machine manufactured before January. In which case your extension will be one year from date of purchase.
What's more, if you have a machine that would qualify for the extension and you've had to pay for a repair already, Microsoft will issue a cheque for the full repair amount, usually $139.90.
The full announcement is expected tomorrow in the US, with a European and Japanese returns program expected to be outlined in the coming days.

The standard warranties in the US are different and are only 3months I believe (I'm sure Lupos could clarify this), but in the UK the standard warranty is 12months.

(*ahem) The other american here would like to clarify. There is no warranty difference in America. At least for game systems. All flat panel tvs have a year warranty which is virtually worthless. Most tube tvs have a 3 month/12 month deal, parts and labor. Most electronics are 3/12.
As for paying for a repair, it may have been miscommunication on either end, it may have been impatience on the consumer end, maybe taking to a (un)authorized repair center not specified by Microsoft, or maybe it was a service rep going by the "old book" standards when it comes to defects. No one wants to claim responsibility.
As for Microsoft attempting to be nice or whatever, not to slyke them or anything, but this should be. Any manufacturer should own up to their shoddy first run hardware (I'm looking at you Sony) and just replace the damn things. I doubt though, that Blu-Ray and HD-DVD manufacturers would do such a thing. Also, consumers should not be dumbasses and plunk down a wad of dough on new technology.
An obvious rant but someone had to do it.
