The Charts: Gears of War Is Fastest Selling 360 Game Ever

Quelle surprise! 'Gears of Phwooar' straight to number one

With Christmas looming, the UK’s entertainment software market racks up its highest weekly sales of the year so far, largely down to the record-breaking sales of Microsoft’s Gears of War and the continuing strong performance of Nintendo’s DS.

It looks like the hype surrounding Gears of War is paying off, with many reviewers already declaring GoW the ‘Game of 2006’ (including a number of SPOnG staffers). Therefore it’s no surprise that Microsoft’s musclebound sci-fi action shooter is the fastest-selling Xbox 360 title to date and goes straight to number one in this week’s Chart Track All Formats chart. See our review here.

GoW is also both the second fastest-selling Microsoft game ever (behind Halo 2) and is the third fastest-selling game of the year so far (behind PES 6 and FIFA 07).

EA’s Need for Speed: Carbon and THQ’s WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2007 both get knocked back down the Top Ten to Numbers 2 and 3, respectively. It will be interesting to see how long Microsoft can sustain the top spot with Gears of War. It will be equally interesting to see whether or not Need for Speed: Carbon can claw its way back up to grab the coveted Xmas Number 1 again this year.

EA has two other titles in the Top 5 this week, with FIFA 07 dribbling back up to Number 4, and The Sims 2: Pets at Number 5. Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 6 is at six this week and Activision's Call of Duty 3 falls from Number 3 to Number 7.

One of SPOnG’s other ‘games of 2006’ - Activision’s Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy - holds firm at Number 8 position, while girlie-favourite, Bratz: Forever Diamondz, shoots up the chart to Number Nine, due to the release of the DS version. It would appear that aggressively targeting younger female gamers is paying off.

Down at the bottom of the Top Ten this week is Rockstar's PSP exclusive Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories.

New Releases
New releases this week are Activision's Tony Hawk's Project 8 at a disappointing Number 18, and Square Enix's Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerebus at Number 28.

Good for Epic, I'd have to agree that Gears of War has surprised everyone and that's only better for MS and 360. I was getting a little tired of Halo being the only game that gets mentioned when anyone mentions 360 (respect to Halo series as good as it is and all). Gears of War is cool and I love the RE4 design influences in it too.

What should be interesting is to see if Twilight Princess will manage to trump Gears of War in a smaller amount of time left in 2006. Stranger thngs have happened.

If I can't afford my Wii for xmas, due to present runs etc, I'll bag a copy of Gears of War and Call of Duty 3 instead.
