Sony On Target to Ship Two Million PS3s By New Year

But it's going to be one hell of an achievement...

Sony Corporation’s President, Ryoji Chubachi (pictured) informed reporters in Tokyo last night that the company remains on track to meet revised shipment targets of two million PlayStation 3s shipped to the US and Japan by December 31, 2006.

Bear in mind that the supply chain problems have already forced Sony to reconfigure these projections from Kaz Hirai's bullish E3 announcement this year, when he said, “We will ship two million during launch period, four million by the end of 2006, and two million more by March 31st 2007,” he says. So, six million by then.

Speaking to reporters in Tokyo yesterday Chubachi admitted what we already knew, "It is true that it took us sometime to bring the PS3 to mass production as blue laser availability worked as a bottleneck…”, but he continued in a way that will bring some solace to gamers and shareholders alike, “…but production has reached a certain level and judging from that level, two million and six million are within our reach.”

The news comes only weeks after Ken - ‘Father of PlayStation’ - Kutaragi was removed from day-to-day management of the PS3 and kicked upstairs in a corporate reshuffle. This move was generally considered to be a response to the problematic parts shortages which forced Sony to cut the original goal of shipping 4 million PlayStation 3s in 2006.

Back in July, Kutaragi said, “This is now the most complex box that’s ever been built in this industry. It’s going to have a Cell processor, it’s going to have a Blu-ray drive. The number of pieces that are going into this box are even more astounding than the over 1,700 parts used in the Xbox 360”.

The PS3 has thus far “sold” fewer than 450,000 units globally; to achieve two million units by December 31st means manufacturing and shipping a further 1,550,000 units. Sony will have to pull out all the stops in order to achieve this. This is not to say that the factories in China have not been hard at it, 24/7, for the last month prior to this announcement. However, to make Chubachi’s ‘certain levels’ may well even have meant that Sony has re-engineered its manufacturing processes – and have a fleet of Antonov planes waiting on the tarmac aimed at Tokyo and New York.
