Carmack Weighs In On Next Gen
PS3's not a piece of junk (or anything)

The iD Software co-founder and technical director said of Sony in a recent interview, "I suspect they're not going to overwhelmingly crush the marketplace this time, which wasn't clear a year ago… A lot of people were thinking it's going to be a rerun of the last generation, and it's now looking like it might not be."
He cited his reasons for the claim as technical, opining: "I think the decision to use an asymmetric CPU by Sony was a wrong one. There are aspects that could make it a winning decision, but they're not helpful to the developers."
In a blunt manner he went on to state:
"I've been pulling for Microsoft, because I think they've done a better job for development support, and I think they have made somewhat smarter decisions on the platform. It's not like the PlayStation 3 is a piece of junk or anything … they just took a design decision that wasn't the best from a development standpoint."†
Carmack, who has had a frosty (some might say non-existent) relationship with Nintendo since censorship issues with Wolfenstein 3D on the SNES, is apparently becoming friends the Kyoto-company once again. Speaking of his recent mobile game he said: "We're hoping to do a DS game version of Orcs and Elves, moving over and enhancing the cell phone game on there, which would be our first real direct entry back into the Nintendo world."‡

Yes its going to come out on the PC/360/PS3. Not much information on the game yet, apart from its a new IP and its not only a FPS and it used an enhanced version of the MegaTexture Technology...

I would like to see Carmack take a hit at cell-shading, make something really cool and artisitc and fun and non-plastic like. Wind Waker has been on the top for cel-shading graphics far too long in this rapid evolving tech-world.

I always like when peopel reffer to doom3 engine games as giz covered, dead on.
as for carmack taking the wind out of zeldas sails (har har har) i think you should look elsewhere. If capcom couldnt do it with okami id sure as hell wont. The only people i can feasably see beating nintendo at the
"awsomely cute/beautiful" thing would be ubisoft france. The rayman games have always taken nintendo style of game and given it an even more magic shine. Rayman for ps1/saturn was a complete mind blower when it was released and the DC 3d one was far more stunning than mario sunshine in shear presentation (the actual gameplay quality comparison is debatable).

I dont expect sega to do anything extroidinary ever again. If they do ill be plesantly suprised but my faith in the company as a whole has pretty much come to an end.
They can keep making sequels well enough (except for sonic games) but it seems like all the inovation and magic is prety much gone.
