NYC Blues: $100 Handheld Gaming Fine
Don't cross the road and get killed. Otherwise you'll get fined.

New Yorkers who cross the street while playing a handheld videogame, listening to an iPod or talking on a cell phone could soon face a $100 fine, according to a new Reuters report today.
Three pedestrians Brooklyn district have been killed since September upon stepping into traffic while distracted by an electronic device, says New York State Sen. Carl Kruger, who told Reuters:

Kruger is introducing legislation as of today to ban the use of electronic gadgets while crossing the road. Those who ignore the ban could face a fine of $100. Has anybody out there been involved in a near-fatal car accident while playing Lumines II or New Super Mario Bros. recently?

"What's happening is when they're tuning into their iPod or BlackBerry or cell phone or video game, they're walking into speeding buses and moving automobiles. It's becoming a nationwide problem."
He added:
"Government has an obligation to protect its citizenry… This electronic gadgetry is reaching the point where it's becoming not only endemic but it's creating an atmosphere where we have a major public safety crisis at hand."

Endemic means prevelant in a particular community according to my A Level Biology...
Oxford define it as "(of a disease or condition) regularly found among particular people or in a certain area".
