Sony Confirms PS3 Chip Removal – Won’t Confirm Number Of Incompatible Games

Posted by Staff
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, via the medium of it’s ‘semi-official’ blog, Three Speech, has hit back at critics of its gutted PAL PlayStation 3.

On the removal of the Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesiser chips

“The original PS3 used the Emotion Engine/Graphics Synthesiser to emulate PS2 titles. With the latest European specification we have removed the Emotion Engine, retaining the graphics chip.

“The PS3 launching in Europe is every bit as powerful as the PS3s available currently in North America and Japan. PS3 is defined by key features such as the CELL broadband engine, its Blu-ray drive, the SIXAXIS Controller and its ability to output full 1080P HD game content which makes it an entertainment system for the future, without equal.”

On the number of PS2 games that will or won’t play…

“We have been assessing the extent of backward compatibility, and will continue to do so right up until launch. It is therefore not possible to provide a specific number of backwards compatible titles at this stage, but close to launch consumers will be able to check whether their titles are compatible with PS3 by looking at the list of compatible titles at http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc. This site will be available on 23rd March to meet launch day.”

On the difference between PAL PS3 and fully chipped NTSC PS3

“On the external packaging of the PS3 there will be a small ‘PAL’ logo to denote that the PS3 is built for the European market (North American and Japanese models have a ‘NTSC’ logo). The model number will also appear on the label stuck to the top flap of the PS3 packaging (beginning CECHC followed by two digits.”

“In addition, each PS3 carries a barcode and serial number on the back of the system. At the end of the unique serial number for each console is the model number. In the SCEE territories there are four model numbers:

Europe: CECHC04
UK and Ireland: CECHC03
Australia/New Zealand: CECHC02
Russia/India: CECHC08”

On improving the quality of PS2 games graphics when played on PS3

"This has already been achieved by a firmware upgrade, which will be incorporated in European launch models."

What a bunch of old toss - how the hell do Sony justify the higher costs to PAL territories now? Even the best "varying taxation" claims can't negate the fact that we're being sold a lower spec model to the rest of the world.

Mark my words - the PS3 is going down this round.

This is probably Sony's way of desperately trying to stop the PS3's costs spiraling ever more out of control,... sadly it's like sitting in the bowels of the titanic with a bucket, nice try, but this baby's still going down......

It's like they're willfully generating as much nasty press about their system as they can to test how much of the PS2's success was a fluke or something.

The fact that they are refusing to give an idea of the level of BC support sucks balls. Sony's basically saying, Just buy it, then we'll tell you.

I understand that Sony has made the move to cut costs. It's unfortunate that it did this when it's selling the system to punters who are being asked to pay more than they would in other places in the world.

And here we were chewing up Microsoft for being open about their issues with BC.

How many versions of PS3s is that now? 4?

125 quid less then a PS3? In Euroland it's still only a hundred euro's less...bugger.

You know, this is the perfect time for some japanese gamestore to export PS3's Lik-Sang style and then when Sony's comes complaining again they can't use the "fear of inferior PS3's coming into euroland" argument anymore...we're allready getting the inferior ones!!
