Games To Save HMV's Skin
Games to play increased role in 'store of the future'

As part of a thre-year plan to save HMV, its CEO Simon Fox, claims that games are central to saving the troubled retailer.
Speaking about the place of games in HMV's plans, Fox said, “Games are already a vital component of our overall product mix, but will continue to play an increasingly important role in our business going forward. Games are likely to be a key feature of our ‘store of the future’ concept, which we hope to start trialling within a few months.”
It's all well and good, but if the reason for HMV's radical new plans is to recover profits lost to music downloads, then it might be in for a nasty shock. How much sense does it make for a retailer losing revenue to one form of digital content to turn to a market that will soon be facing the same problem?
We've already started to see premium content sold exclusively via download with Elder Scrolls IV: Shivering Isles on the 360 being distributed exclusively via Xbox Live. It's likely the trend will continue, and within a few years HMV will be losing game sales to download services as well.

Its gonna be tough for them with Game and Gamestation being more tuned to games. Makes for a nice battle though, we could see a price war, but ebay will always be cheaper.
The download part of games should never overshadow the physical product, if this is kept this way we all benefit. Can't say I'd be tempted to buy content after buying the copy of a game. If its free on Live I have no problems with that better approach. I do feel this is all very half hearted, since once they have you money and the game is old, and players disappear to the next big thing, servers for such content are shut down.
