Sony Ups PlayStation 3's PS2 Compatibility Count

But still won't name games...

14 Mar 2007

Speaking at Sony's London 'media space' - the 3Rooms - head of Worldwide Studios, Phil Harrison, added to the numbers of PS2 games that are claimed to be compatible with the PlayStation 3: an additional 200 unnamed titles have been added to the list, which is to be made public on March 23rd at faq.eu.playstation.com/bc.

Apparently, even more legacy titles are to made playable following the firmware upgrade to 1.6 that will have to be downloaded post launch. PSOne games are also due - in downloadable form later in the year.

On the hardware front, a new HD camera and microphone with spatial awareness are due, once again, later in the year.

Also mentioned but not officially announced at the event was the fact that while Sony wants to enable some form of commerce in its Home social networking set-up, it has no desire to take on the responsibility of regulating any market.

Vague assertions were made regarding the potential for the PSP to make use of some, limited PS3 functionality. Some future watching was also added to the mix with the idea that a cinema in Home would enable users to download what is 'showing' to their PS3s.

I dont know if its true but i heard this second rate, downgraded version of the PS3. cant play MGS3, Gods of War or GTA Libert city, Guitar hero 2, Shadow of the Colossus?.... these seem like pretty big titles to leave out? I hate that people keep saying yer but that can be fixed with a patch, what happens to people like my sister little boy who wont have his online?

Uh... the Guitar Hero games won't work on any version of the PS3 as there's no place to plug in the guitar...

There are apparently USB adaptors for PlayStation pads that will work with the guitar, but not all of them. Kotaku had a piece a while back about one that apparently works.

This page is from the manufacturer - coming on Q2 2007.
