PS3 Sales Drop 82% - A Disaster?
Is it as bad as it looks?

4 Apr 2007
Following a record breaking launch, the PS3 has seen a massive drop-off in sales. Chart Track figures reveal that sales dropped 82% in its second week in the UK.
SPOnG did the maths. Using the figure of 165,000 sold over launch weekend, which is the PS3's first week of sale as far as Chart Track is concerned, an 82% drop produces a figure of 29,700 PS3s sold in the console's second week.
Many Sony naysayers have been quick to herald this sales drop-off as a serious blow to the PS3, drawing a line to the platform's software sales drop. The context for these figures should be remembered, however. Or, more accurately, the lack of context.
Most hardware manufacturers don't find themselves in the unfortunate position of having their weekly sales figures published beyond their console's first week. No figures are available for the 360 or Wii in their second weeks for comparison. If there were, however, the Microsoft and Nintendo consoles would likely have had something in the region of a 99% decline in sales due to severe under-supply leaving shelves empty.

The fact is, we don't really know how an available home console should (or can) perform in its second week because, typically, there aren't any available to sell.
SPOnG contacted SCEE to see what their reaction was, but unsurprisingly received a “no comment”.

Let me help you see it.
The 360 has been available for 72 Weeks in North America, 71 Weeks in Europe and 70 in Japan; that's 212 "region weeks". In that time, according to VGCharts, there have been 9.68M 360s sold world wide. That works out at an average sales rate of 45,608 360s per region week.
The PS3 has been available for 21, 22 and 3 weeks for a total of 45 region weeks. In that time there have been 3.15M sold worldwide for an average sales rate of 70,286 PS3s per region week.
So the PS3 is selling better than the 360 at the moment. With those figures, the PS3 will pass the 360 in total sales sometime in December 2008.
Of course, we have Halo 3, Forza 2, PGR 4 and others to come for the 360. However we also have Heavenly Sword, Lair, Gran Turismo 5 and others to come for the PS3. Exclusives sell consoles, so it'll be interesting to see what happens when those games come out.
Just for giggles, the Wii is currently selling at an average rate of 116,389 units per region week and will overtake the 360's total sales in July this year if the consoles continue to sell at the same rates.
