Red Octane has admitted that there are known problems with some Guitar Hero II controllers with the newly-released Xbox 360 version of the game.

The problems affect two models of the controller, with guitar model numbers 95065 or 95055 on the back.

Red Octane states on its website that, “We have been informed of a possible calibration issue with Guitar Hero II for the Xbox 360’s whammy bar. We believe this may stem from a feature put in place to ensure accurate scoring. Guitar Hero II features a complex control scheme that requires precise calibration between the game and the guitar. We are currently investigating the situation further.”

The company also recommends that, if you are experiencing these issues, you try the following steps:

1. Turn off the power to your game console
2. Make sure the whammy bar is moved away from the body of the guitar and not depressed
3. Make sure the guitar is securely connected to your console
4. Then turn the console's power back on
5. Load the Guitar Hero II game and begin playing

Fair play to Red Octane for dealing with what appears to be a few minor teething troubles swiftly and in a no-nonsense way.

SPOnG hopes, as we can only imagine Red Octane do, that the problems are effecting only a small number of Guitar Hero II guitars, as we can imagine the utter annoyance at having the best version of the game to date and not being able to play it.

In fact, we are sure we would almost definitely smash the stupid, broken plaggy guitar against the wall. Because that would teach it.

well that damn explains a lot. i was getting soooo pissed about my whammy bar working...only when it felt like it. not only that but sometimes it registers a whammy bend as hitting another note and not as bending the note (which f**ks up your combos). i want a new guitar...how do i get one???

I'm not sure that makes them "the worst"! While I acknowledge that it must be annoying for you, and disappointing for your son, what do you actually expect Red Octane to do?

They are a publisher, they do not have a huge pile of hardware laying around their offices. They have the products manufactured by, and shipped from, a third party.

They would have to obtain the piece, and then ship it to you. The retailer, however, DOES have a huge pile of this game laying around their store... and (in the UK anyway) it is the retailer with whom you have the contract, and it is they who are required to provide you with a refund or replacement.

As I said, I know it must be disappointing, and it's a hassle to return it to the retailer, but it's hardly fair to label Red Octane as "the worst" when they are doing what virtually any other manufacturer would do under the circumstances, and telling you to return it to the retailer, who wll probably be able to right matters instantly. I note you do not say Red Octane REFUSED to help you, they just warned you that it would take up to two weeks if they were to do so.
