Xbox 360 Elite: Same Old Problems?
Reports emerge of 'ring of death'

Apparently disc-scratching issues are also emerging, with the video below demonstrating that one unit (in the owner's words) "always sounds like a screaming banshee on crack". At this stage, however, SPOnG's treating the reports as rumour only until we see more evidence.
That's not to say, however, that the reports are implausible. The 360, in both its core and premium configurations, is notorious for dying for no apparent reason. Most recently the issue arose thanks to a patch released by Red Octane to fitch the Whammy Bar on Guitar Hero II.
Given that the 360 has been on sale for over a year now Microsoft ought to have been able to sort its hardware issues out. If the rumours prove to be true and the problem widespread could it be that consumers might have fallen victim to a rush job for the sake of PS3 spoiler antics? The Elite was announced just a few days after the PS3 launch and only a month before it hit retailers, after all. SPOnG, of course, would never suggest such a thing, but we know some people who might.
SPOnG has the footage of an Elite allegedly failing to read a disc, but remains sceptical. We tried filming our 360 and making 'grrrrr' noises next to it and achieved a similar effect...
Needless to say, we'll monitor the situation and keep you informed of any updates.

On the topic of the original article, the Elite shares the same DVD drive as all other 360's so any issues there are bound to be found across the line.
Main gripe for me is Rainbow Six freezing up infrequently, but I understand this is a universal complaint.

Actually no, there are different DVD drives many know this already.
I have never had any issues with my Elite and I have the Falcon edition.

The Elite can have the same drive that are found in the other, multiple, RROD'ing machines.
"Can have" and "does have" are very different statements. You can have sex with a goat, but I don't go around assuming that means you do.

Do have, then.
And I mean about the DVD drive, not having sex with a goat - although I do that too, but only if she's willing to talk dirty.
how can i get my xbox360's password
Does anyone else have this problem, 360 elite nearly a year old,, and only one quarter of the ring of death (2nd quarter). Did the usual checks leads out blah blah blah and error 74 came up do I need to send the bloody thing off again ??Never had a PS 1,2 or 3 but thinking of switching, getting a bit miffed off doing this every year.
xbox 360 rules especially the elites jasper model not falcon model
Ok.. I have the xbox premium and havent had a problem with it for the 6 months I've owned it now. I barrowed my friends Elite, had it for ten minutes, its froze on me then I got the red ring!! All I did was hook it up and pushed power at this point and now he wants me to pay for it!
Honestly I have no problem with paying for it if only I knew what I did to it! But only having it for literally 10mins! I know it couldnt have been anything I did!
Somebody help me Please!!! I'm stressing my brain out right now.

I mod and fix xbox 360's. There are drives from 4 manufacturers. Toshiba-Samsung, Lite-On, BenQ and Hitachi. Microsofts answer to illegal modding was the Phillips Lite-On DG-16D2s which doesn't give out its DVD drive key over SATA, and needs a TSL-RS232 converter. Anyway, the a red ring of death can have a number of causes; the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU heatsink has burnt away enough to not properly conduct heat to the heatsinks, resulting in the chips getting too hot to function correctly. Also the clamps which pin the heatsinks to the motherboard can some times warp the motherboard and cause the cpu an gpu to lose contact with the bus. This can also happen with the RAM chips, Team Xecutors Rrod repair kit will sort most of these errors. The E7 error is related to a problem with video output, this could be cabling or a problem with the GPU. The red ring of death has mostly been solved in the latest version of the motherboards by changing the cpu and gpu to a 65nm process from a 90nm, resulting in a lower thermal output from the chips. In most cases this has worked. It should be noted that when hardware gets a red ring you can fix it numerous times but generally eventually it will get to a point where it won't come back on. And the elite hardware is exactly the same as any other released recently with a bigger hard drive an better looking case.
@Jason now thats a good reply;)
Im having problems with my disc tray when I insert a game disc it doesn't play it just says open tray over and over.

Why not actually save your money and swallow your pride by getting a ps3 after it broke the first time you tard. You would have saved money. LMFAO
P.S. I have both and xbox 360 broke in 2 days. Ps3 is now 4 months old and still running strong. Plus blu-ray is f-ing amazing. Microsoft blows and vista bombed. Accept it.
