GameTap To Be Free But Ad Driven
GameTap, the previously subscription-based on-demand gaming service is to drop its subscription charges and fund itself via advertising instead. The online system, owned by Turner Broadcasting, is facing competition from Showtime Networks, "On Broadband" system.

GameTap's services are usually $9.95 (£5) a month or $6.95 (£3.50) a month when paid for a full year in advance. According to GameTap, it is to offer 30 to 60 'classic' games for free to be played via its Lite Player web-based launcher.

Banner ads will appear in the launcher before the game launches, you will need a free Green level membership to see the ads, erm, play the games. The service will now simultaneously launch some titles via the game portal and retail stores.

The big launch incentive is Tomb Raider Anniversary which will be released in retail stores on May 29th and immediately available for play at GameTap.

This article is incorrect. GameTap is not "dropping" its subscription service. They are going to allow people to access a very small portion of their 850+ library of games for free (supported by banner ads). This will ultimately attract gamers to the main (paid) service.
