In a veritable blur of Sonic-based activity, SEGA has just announced two separate new games for the spiky speedster, Sonic Rivals 2 for the PSP and an as-yet unnamed Sonic RPG for the DS.

Sonic Rivals 2, which is due out this Autumn, will follow in the racing tradition of last year's Sonic Rivals. SEGA is promising, “A brand new Battle mode allows two players to jump into six different multiplayer challenges by sharing just one disc using the PSP system’s Wi-Fi function.”

Also thrown in for good measure is an enhanced “revamped rival 'jostling' gameplay system” and the addition of new characters, including Tails.

Also on the cards is the intriguing team-up between SEGA and BioWare, the company behind several Star Wars titles and Neverwinter Nights, to produce a Sonic The Hedgehog RPG.

Speaking about the deal, BioWare's CEO, Ray Muzyka, said, “As huge fans of Sonic ourselves, we’re committed to delivering a truly amazing story-driven experience within the Sonic universe, focusing on capturing the character’s broad appeal and placing him in a completely original adventure.” Which is all well and good, but neither he nor SEGA has said anything much about the game, other than its a DS-exclusive and will be out sometime in 2008.

Still, although the abysmal next-gen Sonic The Hedgehog had some RPG elements, we've yet to see a proper Sonic game in the genre.

The DS is doing quite well out of Sonic at the moment, as well as the mysterious RPG, it's set to see the platform-exclusive Sonic Rush Adventures released later this year, not to mention [url=http://www.spong.com/game/11042523]Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games.

A Sonic RPG? That's a good idea, I think I'd buy that, but are we talking turn based or free action rpg? Tell us more, Bioware.

Sonic Rivals I'm yet to play. Looks good though.

Sega, you really have to try something else though. So many good games you have made, why is there such a need to keep Sonic in our eyes and not Shinobi, Nights or something?

Not very interested in Sonic Rivals, I've heard it's good though.
Now, let's see, a Sonic RPG for the DS. the main thing that sounds interesting is "A Sonic RPG". "DS only" doesn't sound very attractive, yet it sounds really fun. Now, if SEGA really had a choice to or could've partnered up with another company, I think that instead of Bio Ware, it should be "Square Enix", leave it to those two to make a Sonic RPG and you will have an incredible result. I'm not really sure about Bio Ware though, I've never heard of it, just some of the games, but have never seen gameplay or anything, so I'm actually a little concerned.
