Rumour: Sony PSP Update - Death To UMD?
Hackers sniff out memory stick enlivening codec

Yes, THAT movie I was in is on UMD!

The ISO loading codecs within the recent updates indicate that official games can be loaded from USB memory sticks (doing so previously had invalidated warranties left, right and centre). This, in turn, could see a UMD'less PlayStation Portable (A.K.A. the PSP-Lite).
As interesting is the fact that this supports SCEA president Jack Tretton's demand for PSP downloadables via a specific store, as reported by SPOnG on May 17th this year. We quoted Tretton saying, "I think the advent of a long awaited and quite frankly long overdue ability to deliver a downloadable service for the PSP will help us out a great deal. Hopefully we'll have it out there by the fall."

So now, we are likely gonna see a handheld split its head open. If the isos are for PS1 stuff that's fine. For actually PSP games I'd rather buy them physically, than get mugged to download (which I would probably have to go through the PS3 to download...).

why didnt sony use psp as a minidisc player so that they could use both formats,i think the umd is the same as a hi-md disc but in a different case.
sony have yet again killed two good formats by being too greedy.

How about a PSP with an upgradeable HDD where the UMD slot used to be?? I dont care if the PSP doesnt get slimmer. Give it a sizeable HDD and it's a best seller.
Because like it or not, carrying around a bunch of carts or umds is a pain. Give me something that doesnt require me to bring a carry bag along. I'd gladly trade up from the original for that.
