Xbox 360 Elite Designed To Stop Red Ring Of Death

Robbie Bach talks Xbox 360 failures

Xbox 360 Elite Designed To Stop Red Ring Of Death
Speaking to investors, Microsoft's president of the Entertainment and Devices division, Robbie Bach, has indicated that the 360 Elite has a new design that sidesteps the infamous 'Red Ring of Death' problem.

Attempting to pre-empt the question, "Tell me about the specific component that failed that caused you to have to do the warranty reserve", Bach told the assembled shareholders on July 26th:

“It's a design challenge that we've had to work around and create a new design to solve that problem, and for the interaction of a variety of different components. And so that's a Microsoft design question, not some component manufacturer's problem or our manufacturing partner's problems. It's something we've had to work on. We know we have a much better design in the market now. We verified that.”

Key phrase: “new design”: at some point Microsoft designed a better Xbox. The most obvious assumption is that this is the Elite, although Microsoft was not able to confirm that at the time of press. The fact that the Elite is a new design (HDMI for example) is no huge surprise. The fact that it was developed to deal with the Xbox's Red Ring of Death, is.

If that is the case then it means that there are two tiers of 360 owner out there: those with what repair centre Micromart has called an "endemic" problem, and those with a new, improved console.

Bach also had a bit to say about cost reduction, too. “The second part of this is about cost reduction”, Bach said. “And we are, and have been since the beginning, right on track with where we expected to be with cost reduction.”

Last month SPOnG contacted Microsoft about it building additional heat sinks into returned 360s and found the company to be a lot less vocal about cost reduction than Bach is discussing here.

During the meeting Bach also told the assembled shareholders that the Xbox 360 is making more money than its competitors. You can read the story in full here.

Isn't the Elite more expensive?

My six month old elite which i had hardly used developed the red ring yesterday.

The system crashed a couple of times first with a checquered pattern on the screen .

Third time it did it when i reset it was front panel disco time:(

i have a elite had a couple of time had rrod but seem to sorted out ( prob f**k up propely now i said that )
the simple solution to rrod get a PS3 thay dont f**k up i you can leve them on for days nigths weeks and thay still work i wish i coud have a timer in my ps3 so i could prove how long i keep it on well maybe not as it would show my carbon foot print being proper s**t but would prove that ps3 just keep going but i think this will do

It's truely amazing how every site with a bunch of idiot's who think they have rrod and think that a ps3 who has 1 feature - durability (temp wise 1 hardware/software screwup = death whereas my 360 elite came with quick install replacements and cable kits :p)
will change that heres an idea stop overheating the damn thing and get off every every or so and have a life. you think cause you can keep playing 'its the best' LOL if thats all you care about in a VGS then you obviously have no life atleast with a 360 you get social time or atleast sleep time c'mon now! think about it review this "oh yah f**k your 360 i can play my ps3 for days!" my response to that if you would really do that for ANY game i dont give a damn if it's virtual lindsie lohan with a virta helm system you should NOT talk about 'better' games aight mate? true understanding comes from the talented not the obsessed.

Blimey, someone told me that meth was a bad thing... but I never really realised until now. You make a good point about taking some time away, however, but I'm not sure if that's the underlying reason for the RROD. After all Microsoft itself paid out one billion dollars for repairs budget.

Cheers

Tim

I doubt that was THE Red Ring Of Death, probably only partial Red Ring. Red Ring Of Inconvenience.
