TGS: PSP/PS3 Remote Play Expanded

PSP arouses the PS3

20 Sept 2007

Speaking at Tokyo Game Show during his keynote, Sony Computer Entertainment president, Kaz Hirai, showed off some new features of the PSP and PS3's remote play functionality. Chief among the features was the option to turn on your PS3 with your PSP.

Sure, if you're already in the room with your PS3 then not having to stand up to switch it on isn't much of a bonus, but if you're out and about and want to take a look at some multimedia content stored at home it's a pretty nifty feature. Users will also be able to put their PS3 to sleep remotely, Hirai confirmed. The feature will roll out in a future PSP firmware update.

Kaz also let fly a handful of other details, saying of remote play:

"It frees you up from the location where you are able to enjoy the system. The combination of the remote play and content... you can use the PSP as a controller for your game or you can use the PSP as an additional screen for a more real experience game of PS3... you can use the voice recognition function of PSP. Any games that you are enjoying on PS3, you can have access to a multiple number of PSPs... so you can invite your friends. You will be able to transfer the data from the game you are playing onto your PSP so you can play while you're away from home."

To demonstrate the use of the PSP as a second screen, Kaz showed F1 doing the honours.

The last sentence of Hirai's quote strikes us as a bit cryptic. Presumably Kaz means you'll be able to load game save data onto the PSP and then pick up where you left off on another machine. If he meant that you'll be able to play PS3 games on the PSP... well, what a wonderful, strange world we'd be living in.

Other news to come out of Kaz's keynote is the delay of Home and confirmation of rumble for the PS3.

Oh more hardware related stuff, is that all the PS3 and PSP can do? How about some decent games or any games other than poor ports?

Sorry, but I buy a games console to play games, I couldn't give to fcuks about the media shit (half of it u never use!) the fact the PS3 has had fcuk all to play on it means they really, really need those extra media bits because u'd never both picking up the controller since its launch other wise!.
I'm glad MS & the XB360 have concentrated on getting games onto there games console,
so if your happy with your 400 quid PSP viewer then more power to you.........fools.
