PlayStation 3 Update: Turn On For PSP

Update 2.0 due tomorrow. Web security débuts...

The latest update to the PlayStation 3's oh-so firmware will be available to download tomorrow - November 8th English winter-time...

What's new?

Well, if you had a brand new, deep red PlayStation Portable - the like of which is to be made available in Japan (see pix) - you'd be able to...turn a PS3 system on and off remotely... via the Remote Play1 function... from Wi-fi connection".

Okay, technically you don't need a brand new, deep red PSP - your current one will do nicely.

Happy? Well, there's more. Admittedly it's not games-related but if you've invested in a PS3 and a PSP, you're going to want to get the most out of that combination. So, "there is now the opportunity to listen to the music, look at the photos and watch the videos saved on the PS3 Hard Disk Drive, anywhere in the world."

Anywhere, of course, with an Internet connection - we don't think you're going to able to this while trying to find Dark Matter at the bottom of the Boulby potash mine near Whitby. Of course, if you can we'd love to know.

But there's more - and we don't mean Dark Matter... "Version 2.00 allows for the creation of personalised playlists in both the music and photo sections". You can also customise the XrossMediaBar (XMB) menu screen, and set a custom theme.

The XMB also gets an 'information board' - which will tell you all about further updates - bugger! And there is also a new 'PLAYSTATION Network category and logo' which promises easier navigation.

SPOnG was quite intrigued by the last element mentioned by Sony - to wit, "Trend Micro Web Security, a free, state of the art internet security system, designed to give parents peace of mind."

'Free' in this sense means 'trial'... here's the small print: "The service will be provided free of charge until the end of April, 2008 on a trial basis. The date and method to switch to a pay service and the price will be announced as soon as a decision is made. For more details, please visit http://webclassify.trendmicro.com".

So we did. Here's what your Trend Micro trialware web security will protect you and the little'uns from:

"The Web sites that are blocked are high-risk sites, including fraudulent sites and sites of the types listed below, which are likely to be inappropriate for children and families.

Adult/Sex, Alcohol/Tobacco, Crime, Cults/The Occult, Gambling, Hacking/Proxy Avoidance, Illegal Drugs, Sex Education, Violence/Hate/Racism, Weapons/Military and etc."

That "etc" is kind of hanging there isn't it? Doesn't matter though, you can edit them, right? Not according to Trend's FAQ.

"Unfortunately, editing of the Web sites that are blocked or the types of sites block is not supported. Please be aware that this service is an all or nothing service and once disabled, no filtering will occur."

Oh... so remember folks, if you still want to be able to search for sexy gun wielding Klan members who smoke and drink while worshipping Satan as you have a sly bet on whether The Cult's latest album is any good - simply don't choose to turn on the Web security.

Of course, it's all in a good and healthy cause of kid protection. But don't say we didn't warn all you (small 'l') libertines out there...

I am willing to bet it has something to do with the PS3 being probably able to get hacked...Just like a PC, didnt Ken say it was a computer? Arent people referring it to a PC of sorts?

Internet is a gateway to hacks.

I am glad the 360 has no internet.

"Hacking/Proxy Avoidance"

Wha? Where would the Internet be today if it weren't for this wondrous field of "research"?

"Sex Education"

Do "they" think parents would rather their offspring go through their pubescent years perpetuating myths like the Coca-Cola contraceptive douche, wanking makes you go blind/get hairy palms and that sex is just downright dirty.

Until this filter is configurable, I think it's going to be widely ignored
