UPDATED: Rockstar Gets Steamed Up
But not just yet

7 Jan 2008
Update: SPOnG has been provided with a link that leads directly to the Rockstar Collection on Steam. There still appears to be no access to Rockstar titles through Steam's front page, however. You can get to the collection here.
Rockstar and Valve have got together to make Rockstar's PC catalogue available on Steam, Valve's games download service.
To butter us up, Rockstar games will be offered at a 10% discount for launch week, which ends on the 11th. Unfortunately, it appears that the launch week has been shortened. Following the link to Rockstar games on Steam sent out by Valve brings up an empty page with the word "undefined" appearing. The games were meant to be available from Friday.
SPOnG contacted Rockstar to find out what the problem is, but no comment was available at the time of press.

"Rockstar Games brings some of most viscerally engaging games the industry has ever witnessed to Steam's expansive library of titles", uttered Jason Holtman, director of Steam business development. "We're delighted to provide a place where gamers across the globe can discover all the fine work Rockstar Games has produced."
Rockstar's head of Finance and Corporate Development, Rowan Hajaj, returned the favour, saying, "We were immediately excited by the opportunity to offer our PC catalog via Steam because it allows us to reach out to gamers around the world in exciting new ways. We are continually looking for ways to give back to our fans and this collaboration will give people a chance to easily revisit some of our greatest titles."
The games that are slated to appear on Steam are:
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Grand Theft Auto III
Grand Theft Auto II
Grand Theft Auto
Midnight Club II
Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne
Max Payne
Manhunt
Wild Metal Country
So, come on then SteamStar, where are they?

Well I never. Indeed a surprise but a damn sensible one.
During the Manhunt 2 debacle, I suggested Steam as a good means of selling Manhunt 2 uncut. Maybe it might yet be seen.
Good move Rockstar, now you can prep Manhunt 3 for development and release it uncut over Steam. The other games are a bonus.

You have to look at the bigger picture, Schnide. If games are ever to reach the echelon where films and books dwell, they have to be able to tackle harder more adult and possibly controversial material. Manhunt might have been strong, but no more or less than any of those dark moments of film and book. You can't wave the double standards flag on this.
A better way to distribute such material, and bypass regular retail chains (who are the ones really holding up Sony, Nintendo etc, from the sale of such mature games too us) would be over Steam etc. Its a perfect match. In fact any game which is deemed to strong for traditional retail could end up on services like Steam, which would only help such services more.
Why should films like American Psycho be made? For the same reason the likes of Manhunt are made, whatever that reason may be. Please tell me why one is more valid than the other. Can you?
