PS3 to Get GTA IV Downloadable Content?

So sayeth the rumour mill

Posted by Staff
If the latest rumour doing a sweep of the Internet is to be believed, the Xbox 360 might not be the only platform to receive downloadable content for Grand Theft Auto IV.

We contacted Rockstar today for comment and were initially told, "We don't comment on rumour or speculation". However, we were then told that we'd be contacted by someone else at the company who might comment on rumour and speculation.

As we go to press, we've not heard...

Dutch website XGN reports Rockstar has made it known that - while the Xbox 360 will get exclusive new episodes - there will be additional downloadable content that will come to both systems. The site reports that the exact nature of the content is unknown, but additional cars, weapons and even missions are all possibilities.

The veracity of this claim is, it must be said, dubious. The site claims that Rockstar has said this, but when SPOnG spoke to a representative there we were told, "...we don't comment on rumour or speculation." That doesn't mean XGN's claims aren't true, of course, but it does mean they aren't the official line from the publisher. In fact, XGN doesn't actually name any source. It's possible it's an unnamed 'source close to the industry', but if it is, XGN isn't telling us even that.

That said, the claim isn't that ridiculous. Sure, Microsoft would be within its rights to be stupendously p**sed off if, after it paid $50 million for exclusive content, Rockstar went and created comparable content for the PS3, too. The episodic content lined up for the 360, however, allegedly offers a minimum of 10 hours per episode. Releasing additional cars or weapons that were also available for the PS3 would hardly compare.

In case you missed it, it has been confirmed that GTA IV will be released on April 29th. The reason for the game not making it out before Greedmas also made it out (in part, at least) and the PS3 has been fingered as a contributing factor.

You can catch SPOnG's latest GTA IV preview right here.

what i would like to know, out of this $50,000,000 exclusive, who gets to charge us for the content?, did MS simply pay for the exclusivity or did they actually buy the episodic content to do with as they wish?, because if its the latter then they didnt pay for exclusivity and rockstar could make more episodic content for both 360 and PS3, only the first two would be 360 only or somthing like that,

i dont know anymore, who paying for what and who makes this and publishes that for whos system for what amount of time for a certain cost.

I believe the $50 million was recealed to be an advance on take twos share of the live marketplace sales for the content.

Well either way... assuming there are 2 episodes and they sell each episode for $10, with Microsoft only seeing $3 per sale... its reasonable to assume Microsoft will at least make half the money back if not more. So treated as marketing expense for a bonus of what is the biggest game of 2008, Id say they have themselves a damn good deal!
