The Charts: Mario and Sonic Switch it up

DS owners get training

26 Feb 2008

SEGA grabs itself the honour of having the longest-serving Number 1 of 2008 this week in the Charts. Yes, the spiky blue speedster and the portly plumber have spent another week at the top - the last two being consecutive - with Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games.

In a bit of a turnaround from last week's DS leadership, it's the Wii version that leads the way. More Wii stock into the UK enabled the platform to gain 58% of the title's sales, up from a measly 7% compared to last week. Mario & Sonic also outsells the nearest contender – Activision’s Call of Duty 4 – by nearly four-to-one.

Another Nintendo exclusive, Dr Kawashima's Brain Training, moves to its highest Chart position of the year, sliding in at Number 3. In fact, it looks like the DS crowd is hell-bent on self-improvement this week, with no less than four 'Training' titles in the Top 20. We've also got More Brain Training at Number 15, Sight Training at Number 17 and Maths Training at Number 18.

Back into the Top 10 and we've got Capcom's Devil May Cry 4 at Number 4, having slipped two places from Number 2. Sales are down a whopping 54%.

Midway cracks the Top 10 twice. Game Party (worst game title ever?) makes its way from Number 15 to Number 6 in its second week of release, while the Epic-developed Unreal Tournament 3 has a re-entry at Number 9 thanks to the game's release on the PS3.

Electronic Arts' FIFA Street 3 doesn't quite manage to score a Top 10 entry, debuting at Number 11. Right behind it is 505 Games' Cooking Mama 2, which has sizzled up the Chart from Number 33 to Number 12 with a massive 89% jump in sales. The only other new entry this week is another Sonic game, Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity for the PS2 and Wii, which cruises in at Number 37.

Next week, keep an eye out for Atari's Asterix at the Olympic Games, Namco-Bandai's Beautiful Katamari, THQ's Frontlines: Fuel of War, the PS3 release of Capcom's Lost Planet and EA's The Sims 2: Free Time.

You can see the Top 10 below (last week's position is in brackets).
