PlayStation 3 Software Outsells PlayStation 2
What with the PS3's launch anniversary in Europe fast approaching, we thought we'd try and find out just how well the beast has been stacking up against its elder sibling.

So, we asked those good people at Chart-Track to lets us into some UK-only figures.

So, they told us that in terms of software units sold, the PlayStation 3 has been outselling the PS2 in terms of units sold... since February this year. Sales in terms of value - PS3 games are more expensive than PS2 - have been in favour of the PS3 since January.

The actual figures in February for software units sold saw the PS3 standing at 9.4% all video games software sold, with PS2 standing at 8.3% - these figures are, of course, copyright ELSPA and compiled by Chart-Track.

Bear in mind that that the Nintendo DS in the same month took nearly 25% of the entire market on its own.

It's also worth noting that pre-owned (second hand) sales of video games software are not reported - so they can't be tracked.

The PS3 was launched on March 23rd 2007 - relive those golden moments here.

SuperSaiyan4 - Chart Track covers the UK market only.

PS3 is no longer lacking games. There were 9 PS3 games in the UK top 40 last week (vs 9 Wii and 8 360).

PS3 is third in overall userbase, but month-to-month, globally, it is likely second now. In January it outsold 360 in all 3 major territories. Going forward, it will likely continue to outsell 360 in at least 2 out of 3 major territories, and outsell it overall.

I own an Elite and I can honestly say it's beginning to suck. All the games are the same as one another or just crap (Halo 3). I get loads more fun out of my PS3. There's a lot more variety on PS3 already even with 360's earlier release. M$ are a joke atm. Pissing around with table top games...WTF!!! Focus on sorting the piece crap hardware u raped b4 releasing it!!!!! The ppl on PSN are much more friendly and grown up than the faggot american teens mouthing off over Live. "You stooopid assh0le noob!" etc. The ps3 is better value for money no matter how you look at it AND were getting CRYSIS! We already have UT3 WITH!!! user created content!!! Xbox f**king sux and it was a waste of money even thinking of purchasing it!

Mmmm... attracting more readers does seem to have attracted the occasional stream of mindless invective.

I'm hoping that the chance to indulge in a debate slightly above the level of the mono-cellular, couch-dweller could rub off?

Cheers

Of course, most of these kinds of posts are coming from anonymous users. You could kill off anon postings, but then you'd have the downside of less commentary on the news/other topics.

It's a tough balance.

See, that's valid opinion is that in terms of video games, which is what we're here for.

Whereas....

AGH!!!!!!!!! wrote:

...appears to be about animals and spices. What is this 's**t cumin'? Is it like 'faecal fennel'? What other scatological spices are there?

Also, 'they' would have 'asses' and not just a single 'ass' - unless it's some kind of communal ownership of a single donkey.

Finally, most of my queer friends prefer 'queer' or 'gay' to 'faggot' - although a faggot is a whole lot of wood, so that would probably go down quite well. Go figure, eh!

So, as far as I can see, you dislike it when homosexuals let their communally-owned donkey eat poor quality Cumin?

I'd stick to your video gaming opinions and leave the rest of the nonsense for somewhere else.

I'm going to feed some duff paprika to my parrot.

Its a forum at the end of the day and am just messing about with my talk, good stuff if the PS3 is outselling the PS2 in terms of software but even in the UK alone there are still more PS2 owners than PS3 owners so am still confused but oh well.

Anyways find it hard to believe from the anon about the 360 not having much variety...Thats like saying the Ferrari Enzo is not fast enough...Definently makes a few people raise their eyebrows...

That's exactly right. It is. I'd like to keep it as open as possible. This is one of the reasons to allow anonymous posting rather than the force everybody into a membership. Sure, I love it when people do sign up - having a loyal community makes the job really worthwhile. But that said, I don't sign up for loyalty cards at the supermarket.

At least you have bothered to register and so are at least being up front.

As an open Forum, however, I also have to try to maintain maximum interest and enjoyment for those people who do spend the time and thought to post.

So, before an idea that SPOnG is seeding its Forum with a 'controversy bot' takes hold or constant fanboy quotes simply piss other posters off - try a bit of balance.

Cheers

PS3 games are gaining, because the funk boys at Sony HQ have kicked BC off PS3. No surprise there. Add the Blu Ray issue to that and its a no brainer.

Hey, its easy to say this and that is crap. Wii has no games apparently as does 360. Perhaps you should choose your games more carefully to back that up. Its exactly this reason that I own as many consoles as possible, to ease gaming drought. The uptake of mature PS3 gamers online is down to only the wealthy being able to afford one, half the time.

With regards to the anonymous poster issue, perhaps Spong should consider making that option time limited or something. This would encourage people to register for full benefits of Spong.

How about an "ignore" feature? So that posters who continually post nonsensical flame-baiting bile will be permanently removed from your vision. I'd like to request that an ignore button be approximately 500x500 pixels next to SuperSaiyan's icon, preferably flashing, so that first-time viewers can immediately saved from such rubbish. I'd find the forum experience so much better without having to be exposed to that drivel. Sure, it's not a fair reflection of a democratic society if you can conveniently ignore opinions that make you irritated... but it would sure make for a more pleasant SPOnG experience.

Sure, it's a shame as sometimes even SS4 can post something mildly intelligent. But for the sake of 5% intelligent-ish posts, I'd rather skip the 95% of rot she posts.

You aint perfect either, you are highly abusive perhaps if you done away with such abuse I might change my tone also...

Look I just get carried away sometimes with fanboyism I have owned all 3 consoles now own only 2 which is the Wii and 360 the thing is I can easily praise the 360 on many areas and fault the PS3 because of a lack of games and online service and its controller etc but these are seen as my opinions and not open faults because everyone is entitled their opinion even if someone considers them a fact.

The PS3 has been outselling the 360 worldwide for a long time now, and its catching up real fast in NA.

None of us is perfect and we all spout nonsense as well as making sense. I know I do...

The point is to balance the fanboyism (2%) with the opinion that we don't already know and/or with something witty and incisive.

That, ideally, is the fun of the SPOnG Forum. Having visited other sites - I really don't want SPOnG's to descend into: "Ya n0ob, Ill pwn yaw ass faggit-boy yo, yo is tooo lame i hate you. I izzle not da fanboy, innit bit my Amoooga roolz and that!"

So, balance it up... after all, you've got the bloody Editor to scream abuse at.

Oh, bugger...

Replace PS3 with "DS" and 360 with "everything else combined" and you'll be closer to the pie with lemon sauce...aaaah pie

It's actually quite true, the PS3 has been dominating European sales over the 360, that's widely known. What is also known that the Xbox sells extremely well in the US, however, as with January NPD, we can see that the PS3 outsold the Xbox then. Not necessarily meaning that it will continue that way, but, hey, Sony beat MS on their own turf...that definitely means something.

And before we go any further, let me just say that I do not consider the Wii to be part of this discussion, as it's a step backward in gaming. Motion sensing is not anything new to the industry, it's a vastly cheaper product, that targets a vastly different audience. Imo, the gaming industry built itself upon hardcore gamers, and Nintendo has turned their backs on their fan base. But, that's just my opinion.

Continuing forward however, I think the playout between the 360 and PS3 will be a very interesting one, that will change depending on the actions of both companies. MS really needs to step up and get rid of the hardware issues. Whether they still ARE an actual issue, or just remnants of previous SKU's, is irrelevent. You cannot throw a stone without hitting an article on the failure rate of the 360, and that's particularly disturbing to a prospective buyer looking to drop 3-400 for a gaming console. The other major thing MS needs to work on is their PR in European and Japanese countries. Constant reminders to the populace of Europe over MS' continued anti-trust issues, cannot be helping their overall image and thusly sales of their machines.

As for Sony, it's pretty clear what Sony needs to continue to work on, broadening their games library, which, given this years line-up, should look very nice by Christmas. They need to get the updates to the PSN, XMB and launch Home. And they need to start pumping out the 45nm chipsets and cut the price of their SKU's just before the release of GT5P.

I think given MS' continued bad press in Europe, there's no wonder they're lagging behind most of the competition. If they were to clean up some of those issues I mentioned, there's absolutely no reason this won't be a neck and neck race this gen.
