PSP Outsells Wii - PS3 Outsells PS2 in Japan
See how we didn't say "Pwn"... damn!

7 Mar 2008
It's been a good week for Sony in Japan, with stats-making organisation, Media Create, confirming that the company is top in both hardware and software charts.
"Huzza!" say the Sony fans. But, of course, there's a slight edge to the news. First look at the charts (from Media Create):
1. Gundam Special Warriors (PS2)
2. Super Smash Bros Brawl (Wii)
3. Wii Fit (Wii)
4. Soma Bringer (DS)
5. The Idolmaster: Live for You (Limited Edition) (360)
6. Etrian Odyssey II: The Royal Grail (DS)
7. Orochi (PSP)
8. Harvest Moon: Shining Sun and Friends (DS)*
9. Wii Sports (Wii)
10. Winning Eleven Play Maker 2008 (Wii)
Right, PlayStation brand at Numbers 1 and 7.... but, as you can see, no PS3 anywhere in sight of a Top 10 dominated by Nintendo. The fact that - as you'll see from the hardware chart - PS3 is outselling PS2 this week, but a PS2 game is Number 1 sticks out somewhat.
The fact that an apparently Limited Edition Xbox 360 game gets a good outing at Number 5

And now the Hardware chart.
1. PlayStation Portable: 73,706
2. Nintendo Wii: 64,535
3. Nintendo DS: 51,922
4. PlayStation 3: 13,520
5. PlayStation 2: 10,986
6. Xbox 360: 2,282
In terms of total sales, the chart is:
1. Nintendo 116,457
2. Sony 98,212
3. Microsoft 2,282
And, as we said - PS3 outsold PS2, which must come as a relief to Sony; even if PS3 is still 51,015
away from the Wii.
So, a good week with some Nintendo-produced niggles for Sony.

i wish we could see some chip modding figures or R4 carts sold along with this info give an indication of actually how many of these sold consoles will go on to bring in profit?

Why? Do you also ask for the number of chipped PSX consoles when someone brings up the PSX vs N64 vs SAT sales? Of all the people i know with a PSX, not one was NOT chipped. Nintendo also already makes a profit by selling the hardware alone.
The only thing that matters is how many people own the hardware, if a profit is made from the hardware, and how much software is sold for each platform. For instance, i'm sure a great number of DS owners have an R4 or an M3, but the bottom line is that the software for the system is still outselling that of any other system and not by a small margin.
