Confirmed: NO Sony and Microsoft Blu-ray Talks
It has just been confirmed to SPOnG by a Microsoft representative that the Xbox 360 maker is offically not in talks with Sony regarding the use of Blu-ray in the Xbox 360.

"Microsoft supports Blu-ray today through Windows device driver support and we will continue to do so, however we are not in talks to support Blu-ray on Xbox 360."

A previous statement made to Reuters (and reported here) had used the phrase, 'not currently in talks' - leaving an swinging door.

The statement made to SPOnG, however, appears to nail the coffin lid down on the on-going rumour and speculation regarding Xbox adoption of the high-definition disc format.

It was never about "choice" for Microsoft.

Its support of HD-DVD was blatantly just a ploy to prolong the format "war" until such a time as it was ready to provide digital download services for movies.

Microsoft could have chosen either side to support or could have supported both; its VC-1 codec was used in both formats so it had no bias either way. However, by backing the side that didn't have the PlayStation behind it, Microsoft prolonged a fight that should have been a foregone conclusion months earlier. It was only the intervention of Warners that stopped the competition from going on until at least this Christmas.

Now their stalling tactic has failed, Microsoft has no need to support either format and will only provide the bare minimum of device drivers into Windows. Expect to see a big push for its content delivery platforms before Christmas.
