Music Label Leaps on PlayStation Bandwagon
We thought we'd heard some bulldust from the video games industry...
Posted 14 Mar 2008

What a relief. Seriously, it is a relief to be able to report some of the purest, least-imaginative sales bullshit we've seen in quite some time - and for it not to have come from the video games industry itself. This particular slab of toe-curling rubbish comes from Belgian record label, Alfa Matrix - home to "Belgium’s most famous Goth rock band, Star Industry'".
Here's the sales pitch, "With Crisk.'s newest album Machlaut the Belgian label Alfa Matrix also launches a new concept, that of the 'Playstation-line'."
"These albums will be characterised by their initial low pricing and their Playstation box packaging. Rather than see all newcomers ending up being only released digitally, Alfa Matrix will invest in this conceptual 'budget' line to launch new talents."
Yes, that's right... it's a "conceptual budget line" that uses PlayStation packaging. How does that work then? Well, the CD comes in a box that looks like a PlayStation CD box. Clever, uh? Undermining the competing media is that. The concept, we imagine, is to fool people into thinking they're getting a PSX game? Oh, we don't know. The idea of a CD released at a low price initially and then hiking the price up later is also a wonderful one.
On the one hand, SPOnG supports indie music. On the other, we're sort of pleased that record companies in Belgium (well, one of them) sees cashing in on video games as a good way to go. On the third hand... there is no third hand.
On the off chance that you're a PlayStation completist... the first release in the 'Playstation-line', Crisk.'s "Machtlaut" CD, is now available for ordering at the online Alfa Matrix shop for just 14 EUR (a tenner to you).
