EMC is one of those vast companies that supplies digital storage to organisations like, for example, large US intelligence agencies. So, why has it decided to pitch its latest, 4Tb product at Wii and PS3 owners? There must be cash to be made, that's why.
The company's StorageCredenza array - which was developed, and has been launched, in China - can, "...hold four 3.5-inch SATA drives with a capacity up to 4T bytes." This. according to EMC, "..is enough to hold 1,500 DVD-quality movies or 600,000 high-quality audio files" - and it's aimed at "PCs as well as game consoles".
It also comes complete with eSATA, Ethernet, and USB 2.0 ports. A 4x250Gb unit (yes, only 1Tb) is priced in China at the equivalent to £645, which to SPOnG means a pretty well-to-do consumer. So, here's the pitch, "Users manage the StorageCredenza with a Web browser, allowing the device to be used with PCs as well as game consoles equipped with such a capability, including the Nintendo Wii, Sony's PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable consoles... other features include a media server that supports iTunes, a search function, and support for direct picture transfers with cameras that support the Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP)".
It's now official then, your games console is a full-blown multi-media hub for which you will be pleased to fork out more than its own value for storage. Gaming, eh? It's for kids.
