The Charts: Mario Kart Races GT5 Prologue
Nintendo reaps the benefits of huge launch

15 Apr 2008
Mario Kart Wii has overtaken Gran Turismo 5 Prologue in the Charts, snatching the Number 1 spot in its first week of sale.
Chart-Track, which collates the UK games industry's sales figures, tells us that it has had a bigger launch week than all five other Mario games on the Wii (Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Strikers, Mario Party 8 and Super Paper Mario) combined. It has also had the eighth biggest launch week of any game in the UK. Ever.
Another Mario statistic thrown out there by Chart-Track is the fact that the mascot's games have accounted for an impressive 21.2% of all Wii software sales since the console launched. The tubby plumber is now represented in no less than four games in the All Formats Top 40. SEGA's Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games has dropped one place to Number 3, right behind Sony's GT5 Prologue. New Super Mario Bros. on the DS sits at Number 23, while Mario Kart DS has been given a helping hand back into the Top 40 at Number 30.
Anyway, enough about the moustachioed pipe fixer. Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 is a non-mover at Number 4, while Ubisoft's Rainbow Six Vegas 2 slips two places to sit behind it at Number 5.

Condemned 2 from SEGA sheds 20% of last week's sales, occupying the Number 6 spot. Activision is twice-represented in the Top 10, with Guitar Hero III down two places at Number 8 and Call of Duty 4 climbing one place to meet it at Number 9. The release of PC and DS versions of Assassin’s Creed help it stealthily climb from Number 27 to Number 15.
It's a relatively quiet week for new releases this week, but keep an eye out for Time Crisis 4 on the PS3, the PC release of Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and UEFA Euro 2008 on PC, Xbox 360, PS3, PS2 and PSP in next week's Charts.
You can see the Top 10 in full below (last week's position is bracketed). You can see the Top 40 in full here.

Mario Kart Wii, is so much fun, and the use of new and old tracks like DS version is brilliant.

Agreed, and with so many Wii`s out there perhaps it would be nice to see some of those cube classics put back out there,
Billy Hatcher, Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil 0, Doshin the Giant, P.N.03, Skies of Arcadia, etc
games that are great in there own right deserve a larger audience.
