Nintendo: We Will Double Wii Sales in 2008

As part of its 2007 earnings report Nintendo says that it expects to double its total number of Wiis shipped over the next fiscal year.

The platform holder says that it expects to ship 25 million Wiis in the period running from April 1st 2008 to March 31st 2009. In the last fiscal year the company reports that it sold 18.61 million Wiis, bringing the worldwide total to 24.45 million. If it succeeds in shipping the forecast 25 million units over the next year, its total will be 49.45 million.

Nintendo also reports that it has now shipped over 70 million DSs. Over the last fiscal year Nintendo shipped 30.31 million units of the handheld, bringing the worldwide total to 70.6 million. It expects the next fiscal year to be a little less bountiful, however, forecasting shipments of 28 million units, a figure that would bring its total up to just shy of 100 million.

On the software front, Nintendo shipped 119.6 million units for the Wii and 185.62 million units for the DS. It predicts shipments of 177 million machines and 187 million packets (and/or downloads) of software for the Wii and DS respectively.

Nintendo also states that its life-to-date attach rates are 6.07 games per system for the Wii and 5.24 games per system for the DS.

As of the end of last year, Microsoft had shipped 17.7 million Xbox 360s worldwide. At the same point, total global sales of PS3s were at 10.49 million units.
