Fanboys Start Your Engines: GTA IV Sales Data

My stats are better than your stats.

An Xbox fan and a PS3 fan having a rational discussion about britches... yes, bRitches in GTA IV.
An Xbox fan and a PS3 fan having a rational discussion about britches... yes, bRitches in GTA IV.
There was once a dream that PlayStation and Xbox 360 fans might come together with a unity based on 'the one true game that rooolz them all'. That game was to be GTA IV - a cultural event so immense that even hardened games reviewers fell before it in an adulation akin to the queues lining the road after Princess Diana forgot her seatbelt.

Like all dreams, however, it evaporated as a loud noise woke the dreamers. That loud noise was the pandemonium of the fanboys screaming as the day one sales figures hit the Interweb.

According to ChartTrack figures reported via UK industry journal, MCV, GTA IV is the "fastest-selling title in 24 hour period" with 609,000 units sold via bricks'n'mortar and online retail sales to punters in the UK. Good news for the team up at Rockstar North in Scotland.

The stats also show that GTA IV outsold the previous record of 501,000 sales achieved by GTA: San Andreas, on Friday, 29th October, 2004.

Right, now for the bitching... according to the stats, "the Xbox 360 narrowly nudged out PS3 in the ‘battle of the consoles’" with 335,000 copies (55% of all sales) on that platform beating Halo 3’s Day One sales of 266,000 units. Yes, GTA IV beat Halo 3.

The PS3s 274,000 copies beat its previous record holder Gran Turismo 5: Prologue (Friday, March 28th) which saw 80,000 units sold. So, quite a leap there then.

As yet there are no official stats on how much - if any - hardware was sold off the back of the GTA IV sales - but we still have the bank holiday weekend to come.

The figures have already ignited fanboy wars with Xbox supporters yelling that their game console has sold more than the enemy, while PlayStation advocates yell back about the fact that the PS3 has been on sale for less time.

We expect the Internet to melt today...

Amazing, beat Halo 3 sales on each individual platform and beat its own sales record for GTA:SA, Most expensive game ever made ($100,000,000) so broke a few records and on top of that will make a s**t load of cash!

now will EA be willing to spend $100,000,000 and allow 2 -3 years of development or is this the last GTA worth buying?

I think 360 will always edge PS3 out, just because of achievements and Live, when it comes to multiformat games. Works for me and others too.

Very true, I bought it on 360 for those exact reasons. Alot of friends have 360s compared my PSN friends list, plus I still aint even bought a single game for my PS3 yet.

I too bought because all mates have 360 and achievements (also DLC) but what surprised me is 80% of my freinds are still on Halo3 and not many actually have GTA4 (got about 20 friends on live) but they all said they would be getting within next couple of weeks so these sales could continue for a while yet.

Thats funny cause me my friends kinda ditched playing Halo 3 online within its month of release and jumped back onto Gears.

We've all got GTA now but we're all busy playing the single player, so I dunno much about the online exp just yet.

If EA are still willing to spend $100,000,000 this will be the last GTA worth owning.

Not sure who really doubted that the 360 version would sell more than the PS3 version initially. I can understand GTA4 would/will sell more PS3s than 360s (I have no data to go by but this morning I saw a total about about 10 traded in second hand 360s for sale in the GameStation shop window - coincidence?), but the simple fact is more people own a 360 and as half of it is multiplayer and thus a social experience, you're going to get it on the console your friends have too.

Will be interesting to see the PS3/360 console sales on the back of the GTA4 launch.

Wow.

I have to eat my hat now.

I said GTA4 could never beat Halo 3's one day sales figures. I knew once the hype ramped up in the 2 weeks before it was going to be close but damn.

And beating Halo3 on PS3 alone...

You do the math there meAnthony? The 360 sold 20% more than the PS3. 69,000 more copies sold on the first day it was on sale alone. That is over $4 million more in sales for the 360 than the PS3 in one frickin day!

They say the GTA4 will sell around 9million copies between the 2 consoles minimally. If the 360 sells 20% more overall which is basically what it does with every other cross platform game.....that is 1.8 million more GTA units sold on the 360 than the PS3 or even more mind blowing.....$108 million more in sales on the 360 than the PS3.

And you wonder why all the developers want to concentrate on the 360 as their primary development platform? Just the extra 20% in revenue on the 360 alone probably paid for the entire games development.

Is it really fair to even say there is a battle over which console dominated this generation of gaming? Those numbers seem to scream that the winner is and has always been the 360 since the day it came out.

How many more 360's are out there? Let's see the figures for sales against installed userbase. Then do a ratio for the length of time each console has been on sale.

The 360's been the winner since the day it came out.. oooookay. How's that HD-DVD battle going, has Toshiba won yet?

As with the above, give it a year, then see how many sales were on each system. People will buy a PS3 for GTA IV alone. If they haven't bought a 360 already, they're unlikely to now.

The sales of GTA were against installed user base, no one bought one for an unsold console?, regardless of how many install 360`s there are it still sold more on 360, you can’t bash the 360 because it was released almost a year earlier? that like saying well horse 1 didn’t win the race because it set off 10 mins after horse 2 so its not a valid or fair race, they both had the opportunity to launch when they did, Sony choose to wait until Blu Ray and the Cell were ready MS decided to be first to market and its paid off For MS.

The 360 in HD gaming is the current winner and has been since release and even if it doesn’t win total sales at the end of the day it still will have won as it achieved what it set out to do and that was place its position in the console race as a contender, which it now is with the fact games division is making profit only strengthens itself in the gaming world, and by mentioning HD DVD is a very cheap Fan boy Dig, MS isn’t Toshiba nor is it in any competition to compete with HD media or ever was, it just gave a current solution at the time.

woah, i didnt realise i was being scrutinised.

firstly, i was just going off the 55% for the 360, which was said in the article.

secondly, i didnt do any math(s) i just said, that i thought the 360 would have a higher percentage, no numbers were mentioned.

and thirdly, its MRanthony, not MEanthony, meanthony doesnt even make any sense :-p

Woah woah WOAH. I don't own either console here so we can hold off the accusations of fanboyism for a second.

You have to look at this in context. Unfortunately I don't have the statistics to hand and nor can I be bothered to get them, but if the 360 sold a smaller percentage more of total copies compared to the number of 360's out there (consoles sold over several years, against the number of PS3's out there in a much shorter time), you really can't say that the 360 p0wns, or whatever the hell that fanboys are using these days.

This isn't even week one sales we're talking about here. Over time, my money is on GTA IV shifting a lot more PS3's than it will 360's, and that will make things look very different in a year's time.

Being a winner in a one-horse race isn't much of an accolade. Especially if that winner was rushed to market with a far higher failure rate than is acceptable in the industry, as well as a storage medium which is disputed in suitability for several reasons. And as for now - the current winner? The real race has only just started. Give it a year.

Mentioning the HD-DVD issue was also to highlight again that you have to look at the long-term to see how these things pan out, as well as it being obvious embarrasment for Microsoft.

Love or loath them, the fanboys/girls are an essential crowd. They create the hype and love showing off their kit to their friends who will quite likely, purchase one of the consoles after seeing it in the flesh and playing some games. So with all the GTA4 hype, it's important to remember that the fanbois are required. Without then, who'd queue up at midnight to buy games? The console scene would be played down and probably go nowhere and eventually die. I also think we need another big fish in the console tank. Who's gonna rise to the challenge?

Just a thought.. :)

Isn't all this a bit of a moot point? I never understood why arguing over which version of a title sold whatever amount was valid. It seems to me that it's better to look at the quality of each version - and then hope/expect consumers to support that version. In this case, it's no secret that the 360 version is better. The differences are slight (lower res, strangled online, other graphical issues) but if you were going to pick up one, it would be the 360 version if you looked at the merits of the title across both platforms and nothing else.

As for building brand-loyalty for Sony, is this the right title to achieve such a goal? Seems to me that a flagship PlayStation product has been somewhat usurped.
