A loophole that could have enabled games to remain unrated if they were download-only has been closed today with the introduction of 'BBFC.online' which will see the British Board of Film Classification ratings displayed on a variety of online content.

The new system is also aimed at rating television and movies shown online. Strangely, it does not, however, cover games that are hosted online - indicating that this is more of a retail BandAid than a methodology aimed at censoring game content itself.

What it is not aimed at, apparently is creating confusion with regard to the existing European PEGI online rating. "We don't need to set up in rivalry with Pegi online. We can work cooperatively", said the head of the BBFC, David Cooke today.
