Xbox 360 Gets GoldenEye Consolation Prize
Rogue Agent hits 360-compatible Xbox game list
Posted 17 Jun 2008

As the ongoing Rare/Nintendo/Microsoft saga surrounding Rare's classic shooter, GoldenEye: 007, drags on, Xbox 360 owners have a consolation prize to make up for the fact that the game probably won't make it onto Xbox Live. The prize? GoldenEye: Rogue Agent.
The game has made it onto the list of original Xbox games compatible with the 360.
As consolation prizes go, it must be said, it stinks. It stinks of bad eggs and cabbage water. SPOnG's Andy Wilson took the time to review it back in 2004 (its year of release, back when SPOnG used to score games with letters) and gave it a D-. It was similarly received elsewhere, getting a Metacritic score of 61, with scores going as low as 20/100.
Fortunately, James Bond 007: NightFire, which was better received, is already on Microsoft's list of 360-compatible Xbox titles.
The game is from Electronic Arts' punt at the James Bond license following the success of Rare's GoldenEye title on the N64. It looks increasingly unlikely that Rare's game will appear on Xbox Live, despite Microsoft now owning developer, as Nintendo owns the copyright to the game and, understandably, doesn't want to see it on Microsoft's platform.

I sincerely hope Nintendo plan to release a re-made Goldeneye for the Wii. If not, they should come to some financial agreement to let Microsoft release a re-make on the 360. It's a great game that the world should get to experience again, regardless of platform.

I'm confused? Is this new news because the compatability list says it was last updated Nov 2007?

It's not about finances really, it's not like Nintendo need the money - it's a prestige issue. GoldenEye is widely regarded as one of the best games ever made even if only at the time. If it appears on a Microsoft console, Nintendo would have lost that prestige forever.

agreed, if it was ever to be released it just couldnt/wouldnt be able to hold up the greatness that it once was, and i dont think nintendo want to lose that greatness, maybe just maybe its a DS game waiting to happen? a remake rather than a re-release, enhanced graphics, new control (for DS) and 4 player wireless play offline and online. also with Rare (and MS allowing) making DS games thats more possibl3?

I seem to remember similar suggestions coming up for a Gamecube version, but the issue was around Nintendo only owning the rights for that particular game as it existed on the N64. So essentially they could only remake it for the N64 if they wanted to (and something tells me it wouldn't be such a big seller).

I first read this news here (didn't a the link above for it):

You can't say that this is in any way an 'offering' to Xbox users for the disappointment of not seeing the GoldenEye 64 10th anniversary port.
EA only called this terrible game 'Goldeneye...' to try and scalp some sales from dumb kids and parents who thought 'ah, this must be the sequel... cool!'
Shame on them :)
