Crytek's Sony PSP Switch - Frying Pan and Fire?
Sony admits piracy problem on PSP.

PSP... piracy... bugger.
19 Jun 2008
As Crysis and Far Cry developer Crytek posts requests for a PSP programmer, Sony Computer Entertainment's European president, David Reeves, admits to piracy problems on the same platform.
On the 16th of this month we reported that the developer was seeking PSP coders, having previously reported Cevat Yerli, Crytek's CEO saying, "We are suffering currently from the huge piracy that is encompassing Crysis. We seem to lead the charts in piracy by a large margin, a chart leading that is not desirable. I believe that’s the core problem of PC Gaming, piracy..."
Now MCV reports David Reeves as saying, "There is a piracy problem on PSP. We know about it, we know how it’s done. It sometimes fuels the growth of hardware sales, but on balance we are not happy about it". Apparently, however, SCEE is "set to unveil a new clampdown on those responsible."
We're not sure about the 'in the balance' comment though - does this mean that there is a corporate acceptance that piracy (which is illegal) does have benefits? We hope not.

Expect a PSP update and some police action soon.

I believe piracy does fuel hardware sales. I know people who bought the ps2 solely because they could get pirated games easily.
It does seem strange that this comment was made though, I had to double-take as I read it - surely the chiefs at Sony can't be so accepting of piracy to be ackowledging the fringe benefits in this manner?

He's just being pragmatic about the issue, to say there is no flip-side for the hardware manufacturer in this instance would not be entirely truthful. However, there's nothing indicating these comments are encouraging, or accepting, piracy.
