The Wii announcement that we've all been waiting for ever since we first saw the Wii Remote is finally here – a Star Wars Lightsaber game is coming to the Wii! Not wanting to leave the world's best-selling platform out in the cold, LucasArts has announced a new DS title to go with it.

The pair will carry the names Star Wars The Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels and Star Wars The Clone Wars: Jedi Alliance. If the titles aren't a giveaway, the games both follow in the style of the Clone Wars animated series, which bridges the gap between episodes 2 and 3.

LucasArts tells us that in Lightsaber Duels you can “Wield your Wii Remote like a Lightsaber and experience first-hand the unique weapon of the Jedi knights with intuitive controls, so no matter what your gaming experience you can become a Lightsaber master.” So there's the important bit.

The duels themselves will take in the important fights of the Clone Wars series and movie, taking players across locations such as Tatooine and Teth. The environments will be “interactive”, enabling players to do things such as slice up pillars and Force throw them at opponents.

Characters such as Anakin Skywalker and General Grievous will be playable, along with less familiar characters such as Ahsoka Tano and Asajj Ventress.

On the DS front, Jedi Alliance moves into the territory of the upcoming animated Star Wars film and series. The hook is that players will “Experience the combined power when two Jedi join forces to fight as one.” 'What does that even mean?' you may be justifiably asking. LucasArts further expounds that players can build more powerful combos and get special abilities by developing the relationship between Jedi Masters and Padawans. Players will also be able to get at extra goodies if they replay levels with different teams. As you would hope with such a set-up, the game features drop in/drop out co-op play using the DS's wireless functionality.

You might not think that stylus control is as good a fit with Star Wars as the Wii Remote, but that's what you'll be using to control your lightsaber and movement in Jedi Alliance.

Krome Studios, the studio behind Force Unleashed, is developing the Wii game, while LucasArts Singapore is handling Jedi Alliance with some help from Lucasfilm Animation. The games are due in “Holiday 2008”.

While SPOnG is heartily heartened that a fully-fledged lightsaber game is in production for the Wii, we're not without some reservations. Namely, how will the game deal with collision? You clash lighsabers with that whiny brat Anakin, but while your on-screen weapon will stop, there's nothing to keep your Wii Remote from moving. We look forward to finding out how it works.
