Activision has gotten around to making its officially official announcement of Call of Duty: World at War, bringing a couple of new details out into the open.

Firstly we have the introduction of co-operative play into the series. For Xbox 360, PS3 and PC gamers that will mean online four-player co-op, with local split screen play being offered. Activision also tells us, "Nintendo Wii will also support a unique co-op mode for two players." It makes no mention of whether this will be split screen or online.

While playing in co-op mode players will be able to rank up and unlock perks in competitive multi-player by completing challenges and picking up experience points. Players' rank and the rank of the guys he (or she!) is playing with will prompt the game to scale dynamically, offering different levels of difficulty.

Also introduced to the game are flamethrowers. SPOnG dug up the video released on Xbox Live over the weekend and put it below. You can see those flamethrowers in action there.

Curiously, there's no mention of either the PS2 or DS in the announcement, despite the fact that it was said in a conference call waaaayyy back in February that the game will appear on those two platforms. While it's plausible that the company will make a further announcement about the DS version as it substantially differs from the other versions, it's odd that the PS2 gets no mention.
