While Sony's CEO Sir Howard Stringer staked his reputation on the fact that both the TV and games divisions will be in profit this year, Kaz Hirai announced movie downloads for the PS3.

The Associated Press is reporting that, although details are not going to be announced until July, the US will be getting a PS3 movie download service 'this Summer'. Europe and Japan will follow on an unspecified schedule.

The announcement came from Sony Computer Entertainment's CEO, Hirai, after Stringer stated that Sony's Bravia TVs would receive TV shows and movies (starting with Hancock prior to its DVD release) "without using satellite or cable distribution systems", in the Autumn, Stringer said.

As we reported in March this year, Sony has already made it clear that the PlayStation Network (and, of course, Home) is going to spread across other Sony products. The joint Bravia and PS3 download announcements today indicate Sony Computer Electronics' CEO, Stan Glasgow, really wasn't messing when he said, "Sony is "working on many other avenues to deliver downloaded content," like the PlayStation Network which will be "spread that over the next year or so to many other products of Sony."

Home on your telly anybody?

Great. All I need now is a bigger hard drive, and transfer all the stuff off the old one so I can fit in an HD film. It was easy on the 360, so how hard could it be on the PS3?
