Microsoft: Xbox 360 Ahead of PS3 in Europe

Console war not over yet

Microsoft has said that it has sold "well over" five million Xbox 360s in Europe, putting it ahead of Sony and the PS3.

Speaking in an interview with MCV, David Gosen (European VP of strategic marketing for interactive entertainment at Microsoft EMEA...phew) has indicated that the console war is far from over, stating, "Anyone trying to call a winner this Christmas is calling too early.

"We are incredibly well positioned – our installed base in Europe is well over five million and contrary to what's been reported we are at least, if not more than, three quarters of a million ahead of PS3."

"What's been reported", of course, is the assertion by David Reeves back in May that the more PS3s than Xbox 360s had been sold in Europe.

Gosen isn't the first Microsoft man to question Reeves' assertion, with Aaron Greenberg, director of product management for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, having said that Reeves' statement was "not based on actual data". If SPOnG understands Greenberg's English correctly, he also said at the time that the 360 was over a million units ahead of the PS3 - more of a lead than Gosen is claiming now.

Gosen also hit out at analysts who have said the 360 has hit a wall in Europe, saying, “If we look at the momentum in the business in the last few months, the trajectory has changed significantly. My only message to the analysts is to check their numbers”.

reeves didnt say that the ps3 has outsold the 360 completely, he said that its sold more ps3's from its release till playstation day than the 360 did from its release to playstation day, which means that it took less time to reach the 6 million mark than the 360, but if you look at vg chartz u wil see that the 360 is 750,00 ahead. (more or less). get it right

I think the PS3 is the best value for a blu-ray player, although I would not buy one will get a Samsung blu-ray player eventually.

The PS3 is probably still the best value Bluray player. I was speaking to someone who installs AV at the weekend, and he said that the Panasonic players he's seen take a good few minutes to boot up and get to the disc menu screen. So I'd check any player in the flesh before purchase.
Also knowing that Bluray is going through a few different versions at the moment (versions 1, 1.1 , 2 and who knows what else) I'd say that a PS3 that's online is going to the safest bet for a while too come. At least when download movies kill of disc movies you'll have a games console that might, by then have some games you want to play.
You could try trading that HD-DVD drive too buy back your old PS3.
