Netflix and LG: Advantage PS3 or Xbox 360?

New Blu-ray player attacks PS3 and Xbox 360

The BD300 Player.
The BD300 Player.
Is Sony's unified, all departments talking to all departments, system brought in by Sir Howard Stringer backfiring? Or is the new LG Blu-ray player, the BD300 actually going to help Sony remove an Xbox 360 advantage? Let's see...

The reason we ask is that Neflix and LG have teamed up to bring in a sub-$500 (£250) Blu-ray player that can - and does - also stream Netflix content.

Microsoft announced a deal with Netflix to enable Xbox 360 owners to stream "10,000 movies and TV shows" earlier this month.

According to LG, the BD300 Network Blu-ray Player will be available in the Autumn (Stateside) and will, "play high definition Blu-ray discs, up-convert standard DVDs to 1080p and allow Netflix subscribers to instantly stream more than 12,000 choices of movies and TV episodes from Netflix to the TV for no additional charge."

While this is partially good news for Sony - more Blu-ray players mean more cash - Netflix capability plus Blu-ray also removes some of the selling power of the PS3 to non-gaming punters.

That said, of course, it will also have a similar effect on the advantage that Microsoft felt it had with the Netflix deal. Everybody back to cartridges we say!

Xbox 360 vs this new blu-ray player also means nothing, I know Netflix is stateside only when it comes to the Xbox 360 and netflix arrangements but how many have Xbox 360's already vs this new blu-ray player? Also consider you can buy an Elite in the USA for like $400 anyways and does far more than just the blu-ray player.

I personally think this will have no effect against the 360 or the PS3.

$500 but whatever. And it's not really an advantage to PS3, they're not guaranteed anything from someone buying a NOT PS3 standalone blu-ray player.

From a gamer’s perspective, not movie, media streaming, online gaming etc. M$ has $ony beat hands down. Then you add online service that is next to none and the "ability" for current Xbox owner and netflix subscriber to stream movies it’s just a perk. I first and foremost have my Xbox to play games not watch movies.
This announcement is not going to make people jump out of bed and run out to the nearest Wal-Mart, spend $249 USD on a PRO system ( why would you buy an elite?) and then go sign up for the $10 USD a month Netflix plan just to stream movies.
If you are a PS3 fan boy be more concerned that your game library looks like a pile of dog s**t. For a system that is so advanced and has "BlueRay" Gaming capabilities why does every game have to load on to the hard drive? Better yet, if the cell and memory are so extremely far beyond human understanding why is there still freaken load times in between? Why does every conversation lead away from video games and on to OTHER things like BlueRay? Get over being a fan boy and expose the truth! Speaking of, they should do an X-files movie on $ony's hype machine and.................. expose the truth.

Microsoft should not be charging $50 a year for the Netflix streaming above and beyond the Netflix subscription charge. If anything Netflix should share some portion of their monthly subscription with Microsoft since it will encourage more Netflix subscribers. Since a user can now go out and buy the $99 Roku box and then pay NOTHING above the basic Netflix membership, there's an automatic disadvantage to using the 360 to do it. IF the 360 allowed users to browse the full library instead of requiring that you do that on a PC/Mac and add movies to the instant queue ahead of time, the 360 might have been worth the extra $50 (the Roku also has this limitation) but as it stands, what exactly are we paying extra for?

To the comment about not wanting to pay more xbox live. This may drive a few people to pay for Gold but I see this as an ehancement for existing subscribers. If you have a 360 and don't subscribe to Live Gold then don't sub if you don't want too. Go buy the Roku like you say. I did. I bought the Roku to get me by until the service goes live on xbox then I'll move my Roku to the bedroom. If you want to set at your PC and watch streaming that's your choice. Me, I'm going to stream it on my 65" and not set at my PC and squint at my 19" monitor. I don't mind paying the fee for live Gold. I have very few problems with the service and it meets my expectations.

I think you just paradoxically answered your own question.

But, wait this conversation IS about Blu-Ray and movie capabilities. Does that mean it will devolve in the games and gaming prowess of the PS3?

P.S. I fixed your gross misspelling of the next generation DVD technology,... you're welcome.
