The Most Inane Government Stance on Video Games Ever
Fit to be Thai'd
Posted 21 Aug 2008

Thais are the best - they burn down their own home” - apparently.
Right, it's time to stop whinging about your government's attitude to video gaming. Unless you are from Thailand that is. The reason? The reason is Minister of Culture, Mr. Somsak Prissanananthakul.
According to National News Bureau, Public Relations Department of Thailand, Mr Prissanananthakul "has announced his intention to reduce gaming addiction among Thai youths by 70 percent within the next 90 days."
Seriously. As if we hadn't already guessed that the death of taxi driver 'caused' by a GTA addicted, insane teen, was merely an excuse story made up by the Thai government.
Apparently, "more than 1,500 officials from the Metropolitan Police Bureau, the Children Juveniles and Women Division of the Royal Thai Police, and game production companies will be inspecting more than 1,500 computer game shops", reports Thainidan News.
Superb. We wait with breath bated to see that 70% goal achieved.

While this thai chaps intentions are good, I bet nothing will come of it. If he decides to raid thai game shops, randomly dictating what games gamer of can or can't consume, he's asking for trouble.
Not just from potential gamers rallying in the streets, but more so from game developers and publishers. They could easily sue for biased treatment of their media, which films and books always get away with.
What would be more positive is for him to connect with thai gamers, instead of believing the online hype bs about GTAIV. Fat chance of any respect being shown to thai gamers I guess.
