Nintendo, having already sold 29.6 million Wiis globally is upping the figure it predicts to sell in the fiscal year ending 2009.

Having previously said that it aimed to get 25 million Wiis into the homes of punters in the period, it's now added an additional 1.6 million to the prediction: yup, 26.5 million Wiis for 2009. This compares to 18.6 million it moved in the year to March 2008.

It's also happy about the DS, raising its predicted 28 million sales to 30.5 million units (compared to 30.3 million handhelds sold in the year to March 2008).

Having made that prediction in its recent report, it is also pleasing investors with what they care about most - raising its profit forecast by a massive 26%. In hard figures this means that it expects to make 410 billion yen (£2.07 billion or €2.5 billion) profit for the period.

The Kyoto-based company had previously forecast 325 billion yen (US$3 billion) in profit for the fiscal year. The revised projection would mark a whopping 60 percent jump in profit compared to last fiscal year.

It seems that Sony CEO, Sir Howard Stringer, was on the button when he recently pointed out that, "The major difference lies in the fact that Nintendo makes money with the hardware alone, which may be a superior business model."
