Square Enix Finally Kills Annoying Video Game Cliché
Years of doubt resolved
Posted 4 Sept 2008

Final Fantasy producer Shinji Hashimoto has finally laid to rest one of the most tedious of all video game clever-dick-o-pedant conversation starting clichés in the history of the art/commerce-form.
The conversation starter tends to go, "How can they call it 'Final' Fantasy when there's loads of them? I mean, Final Fantasy XIIIIIIIIIVIC! what's with that?!"
Thank the ancestors, that speaking to Gamasutra, Hashimoto states the following,"The term 'Final' in the title doesn't mean 'last,' but the teams behind it see it as a term for 'ultimate,' and as long as there are creators that are wanting to make Final Fantasy games, we will probably keep going."
Now, can we all move on please? Although, thinking about it this Naruto Ultimate Ninja then?

I thought it was called Final Fantasy because it was gonna be their last game if it wasnt a success as they would of gone out of buisness.

So why not call it Ultimate Fantasy? oh wait because the teams behind it apparently see it as ultimate therefore we all should! why then has it took 13+ games to say this?

I remember when final fantasy 1 came out and it was clear all the way back then to me that final was used in the same way as when someone has the final word on a topic. "Final word" does not mean they will never speak again, the same way you can have "Final" Fantasy MCMXXXII. It came across that others have tried to make fantasy, but this game covers it so well that it is the Final Fantasy.

Thanks for that. I am now going to steal that and claim it has my own.
Yes, I am going to pretend that I came up with it next time some idiot says, "Like, why is it called FINAL Fantasy when...."
Now all I need is a pithy, intelligent response to "So, why can't you have you cake AND eat it?"
Cheers
