Xbox 360 Outsells Nintendo Wii in Japan
According to a Google translation of a Famitsu page, work put in by Microsoft to up the profile and sales of the Xbox 360 in Japan has paid off in spectacular style this week.

The sales figures reported by Famitsu for the period September 8 to September 14 are as follows:

Microsoft Xbox 360 = 28,681.
Nintendo Wii = 27,057.
Sony PlayStation 3 = 8,050

The data reported comes from Enterbrain. Although it may be for a single week, this remains a huge success for Microsoft in a territory in which traditionally it has held third place behind the two native companies, Nintendo and Sony.

got to be tales of games, its all there bothered about, or maybe its a pre buy for FF13? although i doubt that lol, though why not, get an arcade for less than half the price of the PS3 and a copy of the Tales of games, and your all set for FF13!

my theory is that the japanese arent buying PS3`s or 360`s like the amount they should be cause of the Wii, well it seems in the US and the UK most Wii owners have a 360 rather than a PS3 for their core gaming needs, maybe the japanese will follow that trend?

Apparently Infinite Undiscovery has just been released in Japan, it sold around 85,000 units for the same week.

You know what is funnier? The 360's sales over the last few weeks!

18/08/2008 - 3,551
25/08/2008 - 3,124
01/09/2008 - 1,044

Or even, the total number of 360s sold in Japan - 642,981! I mean, that is some funny s**t right there! Not even two thirds of a million! In 144 weeks! That's an average of 4,465 per week! For comparison the PS3 has 2,299,442 sales in 96 weeks, a weekly average of 23,953.

In fact, you know that "psychological" weekly sales barrier of 10,000 we kept hearing about when the PS3 dipped below it for a few weeks? The 360 has only popped above 10K for 9 out of its 144 weeks on the market. One week in Sep 2006 the 360 dropped to 928 sales.

Compared to the PS3's sales the 360 is some sort of comedy god!

Note: All my figures come from Media Create and don't include the sales for last week yet.

Actually your figures are wrong, the 360 has sold around 744,000 in Japan yes its in 3rd place in Japan but if you go recalculate your figures I think you will find global sales of the 360 trump the PS3 hands down by millions.

Sure the Wii is in first place, hell I own a Wii I have nothing against it but the PS3 well its laughable.

your laughable, hardly anyone on here prefers their PS3 to their 360 most posts are for the 360, the only time i see people point out its problems and faults is in reply to you!, the irony that MS`s biggest fanboy actually generates bad rep for the system???

what i dont understand is how you can take the one week in japan sales are at an ultimate high, and use that to slam the PS3? its retarded how can you ignore all previous weeks? and if you check global sales, bar the last week or 2 the PS3 has been playing major catchup to the 360 and theres not much init, this time next year the PS3 will be second place the 360 in third, but its not a matter of where the position the console stands, after all the Wii is in 1st place and no one really cares about that anymore (well core gamers dont).

your a smug hypocritical t**t and your a poor excuse for a gamer SS4, you give the 360, gamers and the games industry a bad name, Jack Thompson would bum you!

Next year the 360 will be third place? That made my day!!! hahahahaha thanks for the that joke I loved it!

360 and PS3 in global sales are millions apart the PS3 could never catch up unless they made the PS3 £150!!

All in all this yet another year for the 360 and with soon to be made announcements by Microsoft I cannot wait to see what else they can bring to the already amazing table!

Next year 360 will dominate with once againt best visuals, best online, best selection of games, best everything!

Jesus CHRIST, SS4, you're such a loser, and so proud of it.

Seriously, if this sort of thing really amuses you and makes your day, you need to go and buy some Oxy-10, sort out your acne, go out and meet some people in the real world, and GET A LIFE.

I mean, I love my games, as do we all; that is why we come here. But some people just take it too far and disappear right up their own arseholes.

What an absolute cretin.

for f**ks sake its a forum and I am having a laugh, i love how you lot squirm at me being like this on here its too funny!

I have owned a PS3 so if i was a microsoft fanboy would i have even bought one? and spent £400 at that?! Sure I took it back cos it went faulty and no way in hell wanted a degraded crappy 40gb!

The thing is the 360 has all the RPG's especially JRPG's sure they are not all huge high hitters but I know its good to have 1 or 2 top ones than several crappy ones but no way was blue dragon or lost odyssey or eternal sonata crap but things like Inifinite Undiscovery where it fails at key points i fail to see why its doing soo well.

Anyways who knows how long the 360 will keep up its sales but to beat the Wii as well in sales is a huge thing, the Wii is definently running out of top games and looking at the releases all the games fail to attract interest. For Japan i know they have a different selection but for the 360 to beat the Wii something is definently wrong then.

So, this is some kind of weird S&M thing for you? ...Now, I don't feel well, at all.

Now, every time you post, I'll have this disturbing image of a spotty troll, living in the attic over their Mum's bedroom, who's beating them self with a copy of OXM (FF edition), whilst giggling and dribbling, like the big guy in the Goonies.

Please tell me this isn’t the case, so I can sleep at night.

Super, I understand you after writing on here for a while. Nothing wrong with accepting a small 360 victory in japan, as while its nothing to many of us, others and especially those at MS will be happy for such a victory.

It might not last but it still makes watching the japanese side of things interesting. None of us know any japanese gamers, so we can only go bye their usual trends. Big question is are those trends changing or adapting slowly because of the 360s presence in japan? I hope so.

I'd love to know how well Bioshock done in japan on 360 (i think Capcom was publishing it there), and how well it'll do on PS3. I know some japanese think western games are crap but this is changing.

Actually, no they are not. They are figures published by Media Create on their website. I have the figures going back to the launch of the original DS in Japan. The fact that they don't exactly match the figures published by Famitsu just shows how difficult the job of collecting retail figures is.

For example, the Media Create figures for the week starting 8th Sep are as follows;

DS Lite - 63,859
PSP - 30,156
Wii - 29,686
Xbox 360 - 28,188
PS3 - 8,053
PS2 - 7,669

As you can see, the figures are in roughly the same ballpark, but the Media Create figures have the 360 slightly behind the Wii instead of slightly ahead as in the Famitsu figures. Either way it's an exceptional week for the 360 and a miles below average one for the Wii and PS3.

Yep, roughly 6 Million or so the last time I saw "official" figures. You never know how doctored they are to make nice round numbers, but they're all we have to go on.

However, given that the PS3 is on about 14M and the 360 is on about 20M worldwide, but they have been out for roughly 22 and 34 months respectively, you can see the PS3 is selling faster. The PS3 is selling at an average of about 636,363 consoles per month, the 360 at 588,235 per month. Both of those averages include the consoles' respective slow starts.

The problem for Microsoft is that while the PS3 seems to be selling faster and faster, the 360's sales seem to be slowing down. Just look at who is making price cuts to try and sell consoles faster.

At the end of the day to be honest a part of me has lost a lot of interest it was all fun in the beginning but since the Xbox is doing outstanding this gen and it has tons of support for games etc Microsoft have done its job.

Many gamers this gen own more than 1 console and who knows I might end up getting a PS3 one day again.

I'm so never going to let you run anything...not even picknick...how is losing billions of dollars "outstanding" ?? really...if MS would run a picknick it would spent a lot of money on buying gold utensils and polished marble diner plates and then serve us all spam out a can and call it "the biggest entertainment release ever". The scary part is, you would do the same thing...

Yes i'm still sour over Halo killing and causalizing an entire genre i loved. Bloody Halo *shakes fist at generic space marines in games everywhere*
