Valve, the owner of Steam and developer behind the Half Life series, has told SPOnG that reports of an imminent take-over by Google is pure rumour.

The developer's marketing director, Doug Lombardi, told SPOnG that the story is "100% rumour". We have also asked Doug whether Google has contacted his company, we await the response.

The rumour originated over at The Inquirer, which reported that "well placed sources" had said a buyout was on the cusp of being completed.

While Valve has dismissed the reports, the fact stands that the company is open to discussions about potential sale. Lombardi was recently quoted as saying that if anyone is interested in such a deal, Valve is "happy to have that conversation."

Microsoft would be best suited to purchasing Valve given Valve's support for the Xbox 360. Also Google know as much about gaming as Apple do about cars...

I can never seem to take any news report involving Doug Lombardi seriously as I always picture him as the moody Falco Lombardi from Star Fox.
On a less moronic note, it would make sense that Google would be interested in a succesful content delivery system like steam. Even if this is just rumour, there is rarely smoke without fire and it could suggest Google will be introducing a similar model in the future as a further push into our homes.
I await the day my toaster asks me if I would like to install the google toolbar with great disdain.

Agreed that it makes a lot of sense to Google. This is why we're interested in Doug's response to our question, "So, has Google contacted you?"

On a more moronic note. Put me down for a toaster that has a disdainful tone as long as it has a louche tone as another option.

Cheers

i feel you got lost somewhere ok say Microsoft were to buy valve things like team fortress on PC would have to use live live cost money PC gamers do not like paying for severs when they can get em for free 99% of valves games sell better on pc were they originate from losing PC gamers you just have to look at games that have to use live on pc to understand that but then agen if its not 360 you do not understand but if it is 360 you do not understand and make it something is not
