Straight relationship for PS2 and PSP development

Sony: Developers Don't Need Publishers for PS3 and PSP
Sony has told Eastern European developers at the Casual Connect conference in Kiev that they don't need publishers.

Sony Europe's developer relations manager George Bain told developers that they can deal directly with Sony for PS3 and PSP games:

"Developers no longer need a publisher to distribute games on PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 3...

"...without the need of a licensed publisher it's a direct relationship between a developer and Sony."

That can't be doing much for the heart-rate of Sony's third-party publisher relationships team.

Bain also spoke about developing for PS2, stating that:

"(the PS2) is effectively an open platform.

"You no longer have to submit a game for content approval."

Admittedly the idea of PS2 being used as a cheap (minus the cost of a dev kit) entry point for new developers without the barrier of a publisher between it and Sony is not a shock. Reinforcing the fact that developers can come straight to Sony for PS3 and PSP titles is, however, slightly more of a surprise.
