Microsoft: Xbox 360's Lifespan One Day Longer than PS3's
Microsoft has boldly proclaimed that the Xbox 360 will outlast the PS3.

Shane Kim (Microsoft's corporate VP of Strategy and Business Development in its entertainment business), when asked about the 360's lifespan said it will be, "One day longer than the lifespan of the PlayStation 3." This was at the Play conference at the University of California on Saturday.

That's in spite of the fact that by the time the PS3 launched (the second anniversary of which was last week) the 360 was already nearly a year old.

This comes hot on the heels of the company saying that it expects 360 to hit a global lifetime sales figure of 25 million by the end of the month, putting it ahead of the original Xbox. Mindy Mount, corporate VP CFO of Microsoft’s Entertainment & Devices Division, told attendees of the MBO Capital Markets Interactive Entertainment Conference, "By the end of this month, we expect our global installed base to reach 25 million units, surpassing that of the first Xbox."

Over the month of October the 360 had a strong sales month in the US thanks to price cuts, with 371,000 units sold. It didn't come close to Nintendo's Wii, however, which saw 803,000 sales. That puts the two consoles' respective installed bases in the US at 11.6 million and 13.4 million each.

The PS3 lagged behind with 190,000 sales, giving it a US installed base of 5.7 million, while 136,000 PS2s were sold.

On the handheld front, 491,000 DSes were shifted while 193,000 PSPs were sold.

I wonder how many of those 360 sales are just replacements for failed units? I have had 3 replaced by retailers, and each one was processed at the checkout as a new sale..

@ Mark. I am wondering the same my self. Also, if they have sold 25 Million why are there on 12 Million Xbox members (I know that some are the arcade users) but come on. Part of that 25 Mil. has to be replacements.

Anyways, the xbox is outdated using outdated media and nickle and diming their customers for every little thing (things like themes and image packs). The only reason the xbox360 will be "One Day Longer than PS3" is because the M$ will be paying developers to continue to make games for it.

Fair point I spose, when the new generation 720 and PS4(unless Sony are out of business) come around, people will still be holding on to their ol 360's playing and taking advantage of all the great software.....provide the ol 360's haven't RROD'd on them.

Will PS3 users be doing the same?? doubt it very much, they will be glad when the PS3 era ends as it's been one big cock up by Sony.

this is the biggest load of s**t I've ever heard they just dub down ps3 because they're afraid of it, the power and potential will last a lifetime. psx was awe inspiring and it earned my respct even though i owned an n64, since a switched to playstation i've been a committed true gamer and i don't think developers like valve respect that since they like licking microsofts ass. ps3 will be for gamers by gamers not some cheap pc in a fancy looking box.

ouch, sounds like you purchased the wrong console and are still pretty saw, lol. Bet this starts a flame war.

Why must people keep on with the same old stuff? My console is better than yours just because I purchased one.

Me I purchased all 3 console and have since dropped the PS3 and I'm thinking about dropping the Wii soon.

PS3 lacks exclusives and online play is a joke so is the content on the PSN.

Compare to the visuals on the 360 and better looking cross platform games and better online and well better everything the PS3 has a long way to go before its anywhere as good as the 360 for gaming. And that PS3 controller is utter rubbish worst pad ever.

@Mark
I'm sure that the numbers are inflated. The $199 pricetag does help but due to all the bad press with the RROD I'm sure that is hurting them.

@SuperSaiyan4
No exclusives? Are you living in a crawl space? The PS3 has and will continue to have more worthwhile exclusives than the 360.

Last time I looked the PS3 is still trailing in 3rd place.

Also looking at the 360 games selection they certainly do have a vaster library than the PS3 including online titles.

Where are all the PS3 RPG's??

Looking forward to Last Remnant on the 360 hear its a timed exlcusive but am sure as usual PS3 owners like to WAIT.

sure, but also gaining, they made up a good million this year so far alone.

I don't notice that in the stores. The Xbox360 stands are always smaller then the PS3 (and certainly the Wii's, who's almost around two times bigger). And sometimes they actually put PC and/or PS3 games in the Xbox360 stand because theirs are too full. Offcourse i'm talking about chains in belgium like Bart Smit (toystore chain), Free Record Shop (sells anything pressed on optical disks store and some books), Makro (sells everything store) and Fnac (entertainment store including books, movies, tv's, surround systems and games). So i don't kow how this holds up in the rest of Europe.

Good question, Sony does have a problem here. Better question is though...where did the PS2 JRPG production went too? Well that shifted to the handhelds actually, MS did manage to buy a few but now it's shifting to the Wii. (notice the word shifting, meaning here a gradual over time change of emphasis, not that it allready happened).

You don't read memo's do you...it is called the waitstation for a reason...sheesh, it's like teaching a toddler how to be a toddler.
