Zune Functionality Coming to Xbox?
Announcement could be planned for CES

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, a source often clued-in on the goings-on at Microsoft, has taken a look in its crystal ball to suggest what announcements the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, which is due to start next week, will bring. "It's possible that Microsoft will extend Zune services not only to Windows Mobile but to its Xbox 360 video game console, too", it reports.
While Zune services are unlikely to fill 360 users with the warm familiarity that other, more fruit-based music services would, a proper music download portal on Xbox Live wouldn't hurt anyone. Currently tunes are available only in the form of music videos.
Still, this is all very much a big, nebulous rumour, with no source given by the Seattle PI.

Direct music downloads for Xbox would be cool. But calling the ability to play MP3s "Zune Functionality" is a bit disingenuous. And as SS4 says, hitching it to the Zune would limit it to the USA.
I remember being in the USA on Christmas Eve 2006. In Best Buy there was a huge pile of Zunes. People were standing right by it, asking the staff if they had any iPods. When they were told iPods were all sold out - and they were, everyewhere, the shoppers ran out of the store to continue their fated search for an iPod. It was funny. I am fairly sure Microsoft could not have given the Zune away.

I find it strange that an MP3 player is restricted to only the USA but considering how much dominence iPod has in the world why Microsoft even bothered is beyond me. Sony couldn't and still cant compete against the iPod brand with their MP3 players and they were big back in the old days with the walkman. Reply
