An Apple Store: we'd imagine the Microsoft Shop will look similar.
A report in the Microsoft Post Intelligencier states that Microsoft has created a "multimillion-dollar model of what a hypothetical Microsoft store could look like."
Despite the dollar-spend, however, you shouldn't be fooled into thinking that the company is preparing to open retail outlets. In fact, Bill Brownell, Microsoft's general manager of worldwide retail services even says as much, "We're not planning to open stores, but we need to learn more about stores. We need to take more of a leadership role."
By this we could infer that Microsoft simply wants to show other retailers what their shops should look like? The fact that, according to the report it's also "re-created a bit of an Apple store" should probably provide no clues either. As Mr Brownell says, "We play with our competitor".
The fact that, according to CNET, Microsoft has also "hired David Porter, a 25-year Wal-Mart veteran" who will "report to Microsoft COO Kevin Turner, also a Wal-Mart veteran" is probably just a case of wanting to play with Walmart as well.
